I was at the boat ramp in First Landing (Seashore) State Park, and it looked like it might be diveable. Has anyone tried it? Vis looked somewhere around 8-10 feet, and access was a simple matter of walking down the boat ramp. It would probably a very shallow dive from looking at the charts, and my guess is you would have to time it for slack water due to potential strong currents. Boat traffic could be an issue, but as winter comes it should lighten up, and vis should improve as well. I'd try it with a buddy...any takers?

Hey Rob,

How shallow do you estimate it to be? I'd probably be willing to give it a shot with you some time over the winter. I think people have dove it before if memory serves.

Patrick,
I looked at some charts, and it shows a depth of 10-12 feet in that area. Maybe deeper in the channel. I agree the dead of winter is probably the best time. I'm all for putting on the drysuit and seeing what's down there. I wish someone had a first hand account, we can't be the only ones who are contemplating it.

Hey Guys,

I've dove the area quite a few times. I don't dive the boat ramp area. It's better if you park at the first parking lot on the left before you get to the boat ramp. The beach area is popular for local boaters to 'beach' their boats on the sand and hang out. Going off season is safer. I park in the above mentioned lot and walk about 1/8 mile down the jogging trail heading away from the boat ramp. once at the desired site, I use a tent stake to attach a lead line from the beach to my dive flag. I then attach my wreck reel to the dive flag and off I go. The conditions last week were horrid! Less than 2" of viz. But that really is the exception. As a rule, you can expect 8-10'. Deepest I've found was 15'. Not really much to see, but if you like clams, you can dig around and fill a bucket pretty quickly. But hey, it's diving!

Hope this help,
Dana

Dana,
That's exactly what I was looking for. 2" vis...Ugh! How were the currents? That's what concerns me the most along with boat traffic. Would you try the ramp in the winter when no boats are running? That area looks pretty sheltered. The beach you describe sounds fine too. My thoughts are when December rolls around, will post here and arrange a meet and off we go. It might suck, but like you said, it's diving. Might be a good opportunity to practice nav skills at the least.
Rob

Thanks Dana! I'm up for it. I don't mind risking some poor vis for a diving opp. Just let me know a date and a time and we'll make it happen. I'll collect some clams too.......I like clams.
