First dives with Gates Deep Red #1

After spending a bit of time in the pool this weekend, we took the Deep Red #1 (now named Avalon) out to Catalina for some testing. Viz wasn't great, and the camera sure does require a lot of light...but it was Extremely well balanced in the water.

Here are a few clips of the Red in water (shot with an EX1). The first clip shows how well balanced the Red is underwater.

Hahaa, thats coming. I had to download the proxies and plugins so that I could use it with FCP. Im getting that footage together to show at the Long Beach Show this weekend. We will have it playing directly out of the RED. Stop by the booth!!

Think I will stick to an ARRI 35, fraction of the cost! So Mike, one of the guys at my film school said they used a red on a commercial, and he wasn't all that impressed. He said it was pretty ruff with the red tones. If thats the case, I am wondering how much trouble they have underwater. I wanna see the footage, try not to color edit, or maybe throw up a non edit and edited videos.

Eagerly waiting! Lol.

I will say two things. 1. Low light performance...NOT was the EX1 is by anymeans. 2. Red One is ALL about POST. Raw images dont look good...and much of the image control is all done in post...its an easy camera to shoot really, because all you are really controlling is focus and Iris. WB and color is all done in post.
