Next sat. we are going to key west. This will be our first dive without a DM in the water with us. Anybody have suggestions or ideas?

Listen to the dive briefing. Prepare an actual dive plan with your buddy. DON'T GO TOO FAR AWAY!!! The biggest mistake I see people make is that they lose the boat. There is plenty to see close to the boat. Go out a little, come back; go a different direction for a little bit, come back, etc.

You'll do great, no worries!

Don't worry, do a thorough predive planning and talk to your buddy to tie down signals, especially the procedure for out of air and break contact.

Its good practice diving without a DM, we did that for all our NAUI Advance course in school with the DMs being responsible as the beach master, and we grew up a great deal as a result.

Have fun, think safe!

Remember that if you get turned around underwater and aren't sure which way to go, you can always ascend (slowly and safely) and look for the boat and then descend and swim back to the boat. Don't go too far from the boat, as biscuit said above. There should be plenty of stuff to look at near the boat, and the slower you go, the more likely you are to see the small stuff.

Also, taking a compass along is a good idea. Look at it while on the boat and figure out which way the reef is before you get in the water. Take a whistle and maybe a safety sausage - you are almost certain not to need them, but knowing that you have them in your BCD will make you less worried about getting lost.

Take some seasickness preventative before getting on the boat, even if the ocean is calm.

Have fun!

Walter,

It's probably like that "first bike ride without the training wheels" kind of feeling.

I can understand a bit of anxiety from a new diver.

. . . get all the local info you can regarding tides, current visibility, weather, etc. and just remember what you were taught.
