Well the guys and I did our first cold water dive here in Iwakuni. 54 degree outside temp and 50 degree water temp.

I have to admit, it really wasn't as bad as I thought that it would be. 2 of my buddies were wearing drysuits, one was wearing a 7mm with a 6mm hooded core, and I was the nutball wearing only a 7mm with 5mm hood, gloves and boots.

Only problems we had were two of the guys had their tanks come out of thier BC's at 60'. One of the guys managed to create the densest silt cloud that I have ever seen (I couldn't see my hand in front of my face), and one of my friends with a drysuit developed a pretty comical leak in the crotch area.

All in all a good experience and this week we're all off to the Sea of Japan side for some clearer water.

Good for you, glad you had an adventure! Now... come over here, and we'll drop you in 36degree F. Water, and you can say you REALLY dove cold!

Good job, many people save all their diving for warm water which is lucky to be once or twice a year where I live. I have a drysuit and my coldest was 36 degree water with 26 degree surface brrr, my 7 ml. hood didn't take me through dive two. Learned a lesson there. Have done 45-50 degree with a 3ml. and a 7 ml. over the top wasn't much different than my dry suit. If you find cold water divers can sure get alot more diving in. Keep up the good work. Cold water, no viz, yip my kind of dive.

50 degree bottom temps is called summer here. I was doing my safety stop two weeks ago and my computer said 35. The temp guage on my spg goes down to thirty and was pegged there. Wouldn't trade it for anything. Ha, the cold keeps the roto routers away.

Thats cold?

54F is a very doable wet diving temperature with a good 7mm set and the right preparations, nothing crazy about it.

Congratulations on extending you diving oportunities with the right gear it's quite amazing how adapted we can be.

Thanks for all the responses guys.

I'm originally from Seattle so this dive was a real confidence booster for me to dive back home. (whenever I get back there).

And if any of the guys start compaining about the cold. I'll make sure to remind them about you out there diving in 36 degree waters.

Still, I'll be looking forward to summer here when the waters get back to a balmy 68.
