So thanks to everyon'e help- i think my best bet is too try the DNS monthly meeting dive this sat in Malibu- although conditions don't look to good.

Anyone else going?

I just called around a bunch of different places and was suprised to learn Fins Masks are not included in rental. The only reason i can think of is high wear and tear and shops have just had enough.

I need to rent the works- Sports Chalet seems cheapest with $45 covering 1 Tank, 7mm, Hood, Weights, Reg, BCD but no gloves, Mask or fins???

seems a bit odd to me-

can anyone recommend any shops that rent a 'complete' package? close proximity to Malibu- thx

I have never found a shop that rents gloves or masks. Fins occasionally. Ironically these are what most people drop in the surf zone or over the side so that is most likely the reason no one rents them.

Good luck at Malibu.

To be honest, most of that stuff is not too expensive - minus the gloves maybe. Depending on what you want.

But, just invest...and if you don't dive much - use it for snorkling!

Our shop doesn't rent personal gear either. Some tropical locations rent personal gear.

My thought is you aren't really a diver until you get your own gear anyway :)

I agree with the above post, get your own personal gear. Mask, Snorkel, fins, gloves, and boots. This way you could snorkel any time, and you will be very used to those items.

I actually recommend getting all of your own gear, but if you are renting, I do recommend Sport Chalet. Most of their gear is new or close to new, they give you 2 days to return it, and it is cheap.

I have few extra personal gear items, if you are interested P.M. me

All kidding aside, its a conspiracy between the dive shops, if they had rental gloves/fins/booties, new OW students wouldn't buy them from them.

I have rented gloves, fins, mask, booties for my friends from Malibu divers (in Malibu) and ocean adventures (in venice), so some dive shops will rent them, although their size selection may be limited.

Malibu can be tought for a first time LA dive experience - good luck!

Anyone willing to dive at Deer Creek should own their own fins, mask, booties, gloves. Do not buy the cheapest booties! make sure they have a good bottom, I recommend scubapro.

where did you learn to dive?

It looks like there will be a bunch of divers going. A crew of DiveVet'ers and some from DnS's club. Should be lots of fun. Deer Creek is not going to be too tough of a dive provided the weather cooperates. Watch the
DiveVets message board for any last minute updates. DM Joe and DM Tony will make sure everyone has a good safe dive.

The shop is opening at 6am for any last minute fills or tank rentals...or if you want a donut.

I don't know of any shop that rents personal gear, a mask has to fit perfect, and I don't want to use a snorkel or booties that someone else used! A few dive shops now are selling mouthpieces with rental gear.

This must be an American thing, not renting fins and mask...every shop in Belize does as did every one in the Phlippines where I worked.

I think the rental of these items is more of a "resort thing." Most shops here expect that you have (or will acquire) this kind of "personal gear" before your first pool session.

I was able to rent fins/booties from Scuba Luv in Catalina -- to go with the wetsuit I needed after a drysuit "wardrobe malfunction" on a weekend trip. Much rather have my own.
