Hello, I am new to scubaboard, but have been a diver for over 20 years. I took a break for a couple of years, and then did a refresher course this summer, and am now planning a full dive trip for 2012. I am in my 60s and looking for discussions and advice on the use of nitrox, but seem to be having difficulty finding them. A search on "nitrox" gets me lots of other stuff, but not what I am looking for. Any suggestions?

Welcome to ScubaBoard, edaf1246!

While it might be true that your questions about nitrox have already been answered somewhere in the vastness of ScubaBoard, you could just as easily have a question about some aspect of its use that has not yet been addressed. My suggestion would be to go over to the Basic Scuba forum and just post your questions. That's a protected forum, so nobody is allowed to tell you to "go do a search" or say "you should have learned this already"--replies are meant to be friendly and informative. So please, let us know what's on your mind and maybe we can help clear things up for you. We might even be able to identify some past discussions on SB that we can provide links to.

If searching and manually looking through the forums isn't finding the information you are looking for, post a new thread with your questions. There are plenty of knowledgeable folks here, so I'm sure someone will be able to answer them, point you to threads already discussing the topics, or point you to other sources of the information you are looking for.

One way to limit a search is to search for the term in thread titles . . . you are much more likely to find threads which are primarily about Nitrox-related issues if the word is in the title.

But by all means, post your questions, if you're having trouble finding what you need. That's what discussion forums are for, after all!

A good way to get your questions answered without the riffraff piling on with the "do a search" advice is to preface the question with "I've been searching the board for the answer to this question, but so far haven't found it. (question goes here) If it's already been answered, please point me to that thread. If not, can you help me find an answer?"

Hey, edaf, find and order the TDI instruction book on Understanding Nitrox (not advanced Nitrox).

I've read quite a few, and this is the very best manual on Nitrox that I have found.

Here is one source: TDI Nitrox Manual 110001A with reviews at scuba.com

BTW, welcome to ScubaBoard!

I have spent hours and hours doing searches here with, at best, mixed results. It is much easier just to ask your question, and very often you will gain more information than you thought possible.

Yeah . . . . four people will respond "Did you try the search?"

Four more will say, "Use the google site search."

Five will say, "That's a stupid question that has been answered a hundred times before."

Four will rejoinder, "This is a newbie, lay off the guy."

At least three will say, "I've looked at your profile and you don't have enough training to ask that question."

Three or four will come back with, "How's he supposed to learn if he doesn't ask?"

.
.
.

and then TSandM will find out what the OP really wants to know, will answer his question(s) thoroughly and succinctly, and advise him of any pitfalls of which he should pursue training or mentoring.
