After reading one of my fellow classmates experience in the same class I thought I would post about mine just to show how important the quality of instructors is.

I will admit I was the girl underwater who started coughing water while my mask was off and pinched my nose till I could get my breathing under control. Mask removal is the one skill that scares me. I wear contact and am a blind bat with out them. So the idea of being underwater and not seeing isn't a pleasant though to say the least.

When I started coughing on water with my mask off I wasn't thinking and took water up my nose. Now I can't see at this point but I can feel my instructor on my BCD keeping me stable while I get my breathing under control (yes this took me holding my nose) but it did keep me from panicing and wanting to surface, I knew I had to finish my skill and get my mask back on.

I did and looking back on it I am glad I didn't try and surface and worked my way through it. I want to advance and go pro one day so I like that I will be able to look back and know that my OW wasn't perfect but I survived. Heck, I remember coming up smiling at the end of the dive becuase I had experienced something wrong. I know I wouldn't have been as calm as I was, if my two awesome instructors, Louise and Tammi weren't right there. Seeing them instruct makes me want to be an instructor one day.

Congratulations!

Quite a few people don't feel completely comfortable right of the bat. You're breathing underwater after all! Go dive more and get comfortable. Experience will help with those issues. Too bad you live so far, I dive quite often around here. Keep diving with your local buddies or let us know if you come to the midwest :)

Have fun!

Congrats! I'm newly certified myself! :)

Welcome to the addiction!

Congrats on getting certified and getting through your issues!

I tried to click onto your myspace link in your signature to read your blog, but it says it's private? Dunno if you wrote a blog about your OW class? I am at tail end of my course myself.

Hello,
I am new to diving and the board. I know what you mean by good instructors. I problems with mask clearing too, before we did it I went into a crying fit and almost swam back to shore.. My instructor helped me, we went under water and before i did it he wrote on the wrighting tablet, "I know you can do it" I di it and he huged me underwater I was so happy to have him their.

Congratulations on certification...If you want to "go pro" one day then just keep training...Keep taking classes and dive often. I had a student last September who had a hell of a time with mask clearing. It took her until October to get cetified. I know a couple of instructors who didn't think she would make it. I felt differently somehow...I gues simply by her determination. By the time it was over she had absolutely no problems with clearing. We have become good friends since. She is in Mallorca (sp), Spain now and is AOW and Enriched Air certified. She is in an internship working toward getting her instructor cert. Guess what...She will get it:) So will you...Just keep at it...
The best of luck to you.

Congratulations on your certification.
