As anyone been to Fiji to dive? I am going on my very first diving experince in Fiji. I will be taking the PADI OW course. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly apperciated.

Fiji is a divers paradise, you lucky ~@%£"%""%. It's the one place on earth i most want to go to (along with antarctica/japan/norway and costa rica). Honesty this is the best place you can possibly go diving. Hope you really enjoy it

Yes, I dove Fiji four years ago... both in the Nadi area and Savusavu (at the Cousteau resort). It is very nice for diving. On top of that the people are among the friendliest I've ever encountered while traveling.

The only downside to diving Fiji as your first location is that most other sites you dive afterwards will be "downhill" from that!

I'm not familiar with that resort. However, I will caution you about currents in Fiji...they can be swift and strong(depending on where you go). Although, being that you are getting certified there I'll bet your instructors and DM's will take you to places that are within your limits. If you travel around make sure any outfit you dive with is aware of your experience level, comfort zone, and so forth. The possibilities of diving are endless.

Fiji is a VAST archipelago with over 300 islands, on a low tide :) The diving is known best for it's soft corals. I was there about a year ago and had some fantastic diving. I saw white tips, grey reef sharks, turtles, endless corals, dove some AWESOME walls, and did some great drift diving.

it's heaven. Learn a few Fijian words, read up on how to take part in a Kava ceremony...and be prepared to get lost in "Fiji Time"

the people are among the friendliest and most easy going you'll ever meet

Bula!

Bula Bula!

I am quite jealous. I was in Fiji in January and did some diving in the area of the Mamanuca islands off the east coast of Viti Levu. I stayed at the Malolo Island Resort, which was a terrific place to put on the fins and jump in the water (http://www.maloloisland.com/). There was an on-site dive shop called Subsurface Fiji (http://www.fijidiving.com/) and these guys were great. The dive sites were fantastic with thousands of fish and corals of so many different kinds.

I did a google of your resort and they have a web site (http://www.toberua.com/). Your resort is on the opposite coast from where I stayed. If you haven't already checked their web site, the Activities page lists some of the local dive sites, a few of which are identified as beginner. As a first-time diver, I'm sure they'd take good care of you and take you to any site you'd like to visit. If you find a site you like, they'd probably take you back for a repeat dive if you wanted. Drop down in a slightly different location and it'll be like a brand new site.

Cheers,
Mike

BULA!!!

Mike- I have been to there website and I did a very extensive research before I settled on any one resort. I am working in Iraq and a individual that is in the military here is from Fiji. He told me that Tobeura is probably one of the best resorts to stay. I have been in contact with them and expalined to them that I a newbie. They were kind enough to actually speak to the dive instructors and provide private lessons for free for me. I think that might have something to due with the fact that I will be staying at there resort for 16 days. I know that won't be going until November but I am so excited that I could scream! I do have a question...since you have been to Fiji diving can you tell me if I need to have a wet suit or would a bathing suit be fine. I also check them out about there equipment and they told me that there equipment was PADI certified and that provide 100%. It is a llittle difficult to by Scuba gear in Iraq not unless they have come up with sand diving !!! LOL

Thanks

You will need at least a 3mm full wetsuit. The bottom temperature will be in the mid to upper 70s at that time of year (at least it was for me in November 2003) and you will be much more comfortable in a full wetsuit.

i dived Fiji in June (their winter) and wore a Aeroskin P2 wetsuit (fabric like) and hubby wore his lycra suit...we only wore them for the just in case we brush up against coral (which we try not to) or rocks etc and we were both warm during the dive. As you are going during November - it will be even warmer - so nothing more than a 3mm is my advice

stay safe and have fun!
