For diving the Bligh waters without a resort, do gold coast divers. jorgi runs a local based operation with panga equivalents that dive the same sites as voli voli resort but much more small boat experience. Stay in his family hostel and his sons are all DMs. You will hang out with the local chief and eat whatever was speared that day. His step son is the dive manager at voli voli, but jorgi did all this foundational diving and his sons are still finding new sites and involved in conservation efforts. He will also send you to his family on tavenuni.

I like too keep money with local folks and Fiji is about the worst with the islanders not owning the resorts.

This is great intel. Fijian hospitality is the best. Do you have contact info/website for Gold Coast Divers? I didn't find any internet results. Thank you!

I booked him through airbnb Home in Rakiraki · ★4.81 · 1 bedroom · 2 beds · 1 shared bath

Not attached in any way just had a great experience and want to see the local business succeed.

Amazing intel, thanks!! We're planning to do nearly 3 weeks total and would prefer a more local experience, too!

I'm planning a similar style trip with friends. We're booked on Taveuni, staying on the rainbow reef side (Aroha) for 8 nights, then switching sides for a couple of nights to explore the waterfalls and homestay. I've been talking to Taveuni Ocean Sports about diving the rainbow reef with them including Great White Wall dates. I understand from my host that they refer guests to this dive op often.

There also seems to be a lot of dive shops in Savusavu, and we're thinking we will spend some time there, too, to try to do Namena. Haven't reached out to any of the shops yet though.
if you haven't booked your Taveuni homestay yet, I would 10/10 recommend aeroview homestay. Spent 2 weeks with them, one of my favorite travel experiences I've ever had.

One observation from our stays in Koro Sun Savusavu and Paradise Taveuni--the local experience is there even at "resorts". Paradise Taveuni in particular really felt like you were honored family guests more than resort visitors. Beautiful people and a great vibe! Can't wait to return.
