Is naigani or malolo worth considering. We don't want much. Resorts are not my thing because I like little cafes with good food and don't spend much time there anyways. I am almost always in the water either diving or snorkeling. The only other thing I like to have on the island is a little store since I hate to overpay for beer that I must have.LOL and also a beach to fall asleep on would be nice.
So far the only thing i find is resorts that overtake the islands and leave no options other than to purchase everything there. Also we would also be open to staying 1 week on one island and another week somewhere else. The book I have is very confusing so any help from someone who has been there would be greatly appreciated.

Malolo is just a little island right off the coast of Fiji with, last I knew, two resorts (Musket Cove and another one) on it. It is a popular with the sailboat crowd, otherwise just a small place. My experience in '04 was the resorts were the only places and store on the island. Cheaper places will be in the Yasawa and Mamanucca Islands. They have accomodations ranging backpacker places to high end and they are easy to get to from Nadi.

Best option cost wise and for the best of Fiji diving .... check out the rental home accommodation options on Taveuni Island.

We found the best land based diving options were on Taveuni and Kadavu (with shark encounters out of Pacific Harbour or Beqa).

There are some great "free night" offers at the moment.

Maravu Resort on Taveuni has a special to stay seven nights and pay for five.

Lots of things to do here snorkelling, kayaking, horseback riding, tennis, rain forrest hiking, cooking lessons, natural waterslide and a even a golf course close by. There is a village with shops.

The beach has a hammock with your name on it.

Except for the house across the street from the airport. The jerk running that screwed us on our trip. Beware what you might get in trying to save and rent your own house. I wish it would have worked out, but instead:

- house across from the airport rather than the sedate location they portray on the website. Plane literally flies over the house on the landing run. You smell AV fuel at the house because the plane sits there with the engines running while disembarking/re-embarking
- the house is just right next to the next house, tract style. Again, not the paradise described by them
- everybody has a dog next door and "your own private beach" is open to the them all, so they were up at 6 AM every morning running around barking on "your" beach.
- There is a diesel generator literally in the front yard which runs from 6 AM to 11 PM.
- The house is sort of on a point which sticks out and so is more exposed to the storms which come by meaning other places are OK, but it is raining like hell at your place. Horizontal rain. I had it for 6 of 9 days.
- the "snorkeling" in front of the house which I rented the place to get is pretty non-existent. The tide goes out in the morning leaving shin deep water all the way out to the reef line which is shielded by staghorn coral preventing you from getting past to swim. During the day, the locals are out walking around literally on the shallow coral heads pulling whatever they can find. When the tide comes back in, the water is very murky with lots of sediment mixed in. Which makes it difficult to see the beautiful sea snakes which inhabit the local area. Very cool but not something to step on.
- The idiot lady who is supposed to take care of the place and cook can't cook anything besides basic rice and fried pork chop or fish and won't do anything else to help you. We had to go next store at 11 PM to find someone to call a cab to take us to the 3rd world hospital when I got sick.
- The bed was rock hard and l literally got bruises on my hips from the bed.
- The houses in the area all had roosters which began crowing at, I can tell you because I woke up every single day, 5:30 AM. And crowed every 2 minutes from then on. I expected country but you can not get back to sleep with that continuous noise. And remember that the dogs come out and then the generator comes on...and then the flights start coming in....
- The best part was it had a beautiful deck which was useless in the horizontal rain we got for 6 straight days. The beach was down the backyard about 30 feet away. Rain would come through and white out the beach so we couldn't see it from the house.
- On day 2 of rain, the house started to leak. Onto the furniture and bed. Looked like a beautiful wood place but it started leaking all over and we had to push all the furniture around to keep it dry for somewhere to sit. New leaks would start and we had to move the furniture again until there weren't any places left. With no TV or radio, the way I wanted it for our trip away, we were now there for multiple days with no way to tell what weather would be and nothing to do because the weather was bad outside and everywhere was a torrent so hikes, etc were very difficult.

The sailboat charter we did afterwards was night and day better.

Hope your experience was better than mine.

The day we got there and the day we left was beautiful and hot.

And I still love Fiji, but not to stay at that place. My warning is just to watch out for what you actually get rather than their Photoshopped website. Of course, we paid in cash and got nothing back from the American owner, despite requesting some comp for the place become unusable, inside, in the rain.

I found Scott Kukral at Sea Fiji Travel to be very helpful in planning our trip last fall. He's a member of SB, but I'm not sure how often he checks in here. They do have their own site, though. He's based in the US, but is VERY knowledgable about diving and Fiji, and if you drop him an email I'm sure he can put the pieces together for you.

We have been to Fiji several times. If you want to dive the Bligh Waters and want to rent a home, a place about a 5 minute walk from Wananvu called Starfish Blue was lovely. You can check it out at Fiji Accommodation Vacation Rental House on the Suncoast in Viti Levu. If you want to dive the Astrolabe Reef (near Kadavu), there is an absolutely incredible place called Koromakawa. We were there for 10 days last Christmas. It is located on Ono Island (about an hour boat ride from the airport on Kadavu). They have only one guest house so we were the only guests. Also, we were the only ones on the dive boat as well. Plus we got to fish during the SI and on the way back to Koromakawa. I would highly recommend this place if you want to have it all to yourself and a private dive boat. Another option on Ono Island that gets good reviews (and may be cheaper than Koromakawa) is Mai Dive. On Taveuni there is a place called Nakia Resort (they have only 4 bures) so it is very small. They get excellent reviews on Tripadvisor. I also emailed some people who have been there, and it seems like a great place to stay with an excellent dive operation. If you have any other questions, please feel free to email me.
