Looking for advice on a dive location. I have done a lot of diving in the carribbean and my husband wants to see some big stuff. Where would you recommend if you could go to either Fiji or Tahiti and why? We're looking at going in December and wanted to know some ideas. We can't go crazy with expense, but we know it's going to cost us in either one of these locations.
Any help would be appreciated.

Tahiti is the more expensive of the two. But there is no "big stuff" in Fiji.

The really big stuff is in Palau, particularly in Peleliu. But those are not cheap trips either. Generally speaking, Tahiti is the most expensive location of all.

Wow, I wish I was just in a position to be making that decision.

Well, you just pass through Tahiti ;)

Moorea is the sister island, which is more of the tourist island.

Some of the other islands offer different things, Bora Bora etc.

We stayed in a small (very small) bungalow next to a dive operator (really, we shared a common fence) in Moorea last summer. I would literally walk down to the dive boat, NICE!

Lots of "big" stuff to be seen there. Black tip reef sharks everywhere, a couple of larger aggressive sharks, lots of big rays (I even saw a couple snorkeling off the beach). A pretty amazing place to dive, but I don't have a lot to compare it to (Monterey, 1 escorted dive in Hawii).

If you are interested in French Polynesia a good thing to do is to see if you can rent a bungalo from a local like we did. Though it was small (no, really it was SMALL) and no frills, it was cheaper than the alternatives and we could cook in our place. Worked out well.

I have worked in both locations so know a lot about them. Fiji has a few big things, mantas and sharks but not guaranteed. Loads of colour, soft coral heaven.
Tahiti on the other hand, the Tuamotu islands to be exact, has loads of sharks, pretty consistent mantas, a resident pod of Bottlenose Dolphins in Rangiroa, massive schools of fish. No colour though as soft corals non existent. Give the Society islands a miss, ie Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora- they have some great shark feeds with Big Lemon sharks and mantas at Bora but thats about it. Tuamotus much better diving and much clearer water.
December a great time to go, especially around the full moon as that is when the eagle rays mate in Tiputa pass of Rangiroa, brings in the Great Hammers (thats 16 feet of shark, big enough?)
I would personally suggest the Tahiti Aggressor as you will get 4 atolls instead of one if you go land based, two of the islands Apataki and Toau do not have dive shops and these are the best two atolls for major grey reef shark action, better Rangi because not as deep. When i say major i mean 100+ in a school. Aggressor is a great way to go becuz you get 4 dives per day, food and drinks included. To do the same land based is going to cost the same, hotels in French Poly are not cheap.
And no offense to Triton but the Tuamotus have much better action and more big stuff than Palau/Peleliu, i know that as a fact cuz i worked there for 3 years too.

Both your choices are great, do em both eventually, just a question of where to go first!

There is plenty "big stuff" to see in Fiji, you just have to go to the right spots.

eg. the bull/tiger shark feed in Beqa, consistent manta-action in Kadavu.

The Koro Sea-Bligh Water-Lomaiviti area also has plenty of big pelagic stuff. I have seen mantas, great hammerheads, marlin, slivertips, grey reefs, doogies, yellowtooth etc.

Haven't dived in French Polynesia, but have heard good things about Rangiroa. Strong currents and plenty of reef sharks. Expensive!

Palau is very good for consistent viz and big stuff on most dives.

Fiji or Tahiti? I could not decide either so I'm doing both next year and yes Mike on the Aggressors.

Apparently, you haven't seen enough of Fiji. If by "big stuff", you mean sharks and pelagics such as tuna and jacks, they're there. While there's lots of "big stuff" to be seen in Palau, it has no monopoly on them.
