I think the article writer meant "bêche-de-mer" (literally "sea-spade") in French, or sea cucumber. I guess they were free diving hunters, with shallow water black out being a major risk - but not onboard a boat? The writer may have got that wrong too, tho?

Police are investigating the death of a 27-year‑old man who died whilst diving for beach‑de-mer in the Lau waters on Wednesday. The 27 year old with two other men were diving in the waters off Namuka Island in the Lau Group when the incident happened.
They were on their way back to the village after diving when the man collapsed inside the boat.
He was rushed to the Namuka I Lau Health Centre but was pronounced dead on arrival.
A team of police officers and the pathologist will leave for the island today to investigate the death.
