We did the discovery cruise a couple years ago. It is a smaller ship and you can really feel when the water is tossing. The food on the buffets is very good. There is bottled water on the tables but if you open one you get charged for it. They have fountain drinks that are free with the buffet. We found the ship to be a very long trip and said we would rather pay to fly there next time. We ended up renting a cabin on the way there, and i thought my grandmas pantry was musty, till we opened the door to the cabin. All in all it wasn't bad for what we paid at the time. Which was about 80 bucks each.

Oh ya and if you do take it make sure you have a good tip for the baggage handlers, or your bags might not make it back. When we walked up i handed the guy my bags and he says to lyn and i that "a tip would make sure our bags made it back". All i had was a ten. so i gave it to him. There was a guy that took the ship a cross and dove with a different outfit that we talked to at the resort, he refused to give a tip and his bags didn't show for two days after we returned to florida. Now im not saying the guy held his bags but it just seems a little funny.

One thing i forgot was if you were taking the ship across you used to be able to bring back as much rum (their rum) from the island. I dont know if they changed this, but we brought back a case, 12 litres, and didn't have to pay any tax or anything. On the plane they only allowed you two one litre bolltes. Dont know if it changed. Their was a couple that went across that bought all the booze for their daughters wedding. They went for three days and had cases of booze.

Well it seems that the only way across is with the Discovery .... called them and it would cost $189 each for the return trip

Surely there must be another way?! How do you guys get to BB's now that they moved to Freeport? Are there private charters? Are there cheap(ish) flights? I wish they still sailed out of Miami, the crossing was fun and lot less trouble then finding a way over to the islands.

There was a cat out of Miami that ran to Nassau.I dont know if they still do or if it is one of the boats that shut down.ANyway, if they still operate, they may have a ferry to Freeport.

sjspeck:
Try BahamasAir - they're on Expedia.

Or DON'T....even the locals call it BananaAir. Worse connecting flights we've ever had. I'm still mad just thinking about it 2 years ago.:light:

We also have done the cruise. It IS a slow trip because they want you to visit the casino, go to the bars, eat and drink...of course leaving tips...visit the jewerly store, etc. It is cheaper than flying (kids were really cheap) but after 2 or 3 years of the "cruise" we decided to fly from Fort Lauderdale the last time. It was great, except DONT FLY BAHAMASAIR....anything else, no mattter the price, has to be better!!

So don't even thing of BananaAir? What about AA or Continental? are they any gooder? I found flights for a bit more then the "cruise" would cost for 45-60minute flight......so that might be an option

You've got it now, American or Continental, or --depending upon where you live--AirTran!!
