SAN DIEGO - The U.S. Coast Guard and lifeguards on Saturday are searching for a diver reported missing off Mission Beach.
The incident was reported at about 1:30 p.m., according to the Coast Guard.
"We received a call from a vessel offshore of a missing diver who did not surface," said San Diego Lifeguard Lt. John Everhart. "We have lifeguard divers underwater, vessels on the surface and helicopters all engaged in the search."
Authorities are searching the area near the Yukon dive site, which is about 1.5 miles west of Mission Beach. The Yukon is a former Canadian naval vessel sunk off Mission Beach to create what is now a popular diving reef.
The diver was part of a group on a commercial dive boat called the Humble. The diver was described as a woman in her early 20s and was said to be an experienced diver.
The Coast Guard has launched a helicopter and patrol boat to aid in the search. Lifeguards are also participating in the search.
More details will be posted as they become available.

SAN DIEGO - The body of a diver reported missing Saturday was discovered before dark by a search team underwater at the Yukon dive site about a mile and half off Mission Beach.
"She is deceased and she is on board the Yukon underwater," San Diego Lifeguard Lt. John Everhart said.
Lifeguards told 10News that due to dangerous conditions related to the high surf, the diver's body will be recovered on Sunday.
Everhart identified the diver as a woman in her 20s.
San Diego Lifeguards and the Coast Guard had been searching for her with boats, a helicopter and a dive team. Everhart said the woman's body was found just before dark about 4:30 p.m.
Lifeguards received a call from a vessel offshore that a diver, who was a student in an advanced class with an instructor, had failed to surface at a designated time and was missing.
The Coast Guard was called in to assist about 2:30 p.m. and they dispatched a helicopter and boats to join in the rescue effort.

Very sad.

"On board the Yukon" and "an advanced class" I wonder if this was an Advanced Wreck class or an AOW?

MISSION BEACH — San Diego lifeguards have found the body of a diver who went missing off Mission Beach two hours earlier.
Lifeguards discovered the body of the woman, who was in her early 20s, around 4:40 p.m., U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Matthew Cramer said.
The woman was found about 100 feet underwater at the site of the Yukon, a Canadian destroyer escort sunk nearly two miles off the coast in 2000 for recreational diving, Cramer said. Her body was expected to be recovered Sunday morning.
An autopsy will determine her cause of death.
A dive boat contacted the lifeguard service about 2:30 p.m. to report that a diver was overdue, lifeguard Lt. John Everheart said.
Instructors with a class of four were using the 45-foot, San Diego-based motor vessel Humboldt as they dove on the Yukon, authorities said.
Everheart said the divers were underwater together, and when they came up, one woman was missing. She was reported to be an advanced diver.
About half a dozen lifeguard divers searched for the woman, Everheart said.
The Coast Guard sent a helicopter and a crew aboard a small boat to help in the search. A San Diego Fire-Rescue Department helicopter also assisted.
The 366-foot Yukon lies in 105 feet of water off Mission Beach in the northern area

Very sad. I have only dove the Yukon a couple of times but the surge and current was quite challenging when I was there.
My condolences to the family.

Very sad for sure, been seeing a few recent sad situations for some new divers doing something they really have a passion for...
Ive done some recent deep water dives in currents in Cozumel but have zero interest in visting The Yukon.
Not cuz its dangerous just no interest, would rather checkout the local kelp forest, much more amazing & more life IMO
