I see sometimes other divers feeding school of fish...With what exactly do you feed them ?? is it a good idea?... I know sometimes they say feeding is prohibited...

I had always heard it was bad; I figured it was like not feeding bears or squirrels. Our DM in Coz insisted on feeding them, though, even though we asked him not to. (Environmental concerns and a MAJOR fear of fish...)

They seem to have plenty of healthy fish, so maybe it is not that bad?

ummm. Did I read that wrong?

Gee, I fed the fish on Saturday off the side of the boat. But I suspose it's not the kind of feeding you were referring to...:D

Coffee. Breakfast...

What kind of food are you bringing to feed the fish ???

I dive at an aquarium and we feed our fish frozen peas.
Some do hot dogs, but from a bios stand point I don't think that is a healthy idea for the fish. plus I'd avoid feeding any kind of meat product.

Yeah, I've heard of this practice too.
And once, I saw someone with a plastic baggy and some kind of dried food - looked like fish flakes from the pet store. Dunno what it was.
They inverted the bag and flushed out a small cloud of "goodies" (maybe 2 cubic foot cloud before dissipating). The small reef fish nearby hesitantly picked at the munchies then departed to safe distances again.
I was glad it wasn't meat or anything "chum-like", and I was doubly glad he wasn't feeding anything large enough to be a threat (e.g. barracuda, eel, shark, etc.).

From the small size of the infrequent feedings, I'd seriously doubt that's gonna change the ecology of the reef. The fish I saw weren't eager to follow him away from the safety of their spots on the reef, and there wasn't enough of it for them to get bloated and lay around fat & passive. They went right back to scouring for their own food.

I'm just hesitant to try it myself because a) I don't know where it is/isn't legal, and b) I know from having aquariums that if you feed them the wrong kind of food, or even the wrong size/composition of food, it can kill them from improper digestion.

Are frozen peas supposed to be pretty "safe" for all species, scubapolly?
