Funny to see the ice. Does that happen often? I drove by the Fraser river Sunday and it was freezing over with ice blocks as well.
I don't know if it happens every year, but I assume it's fairly common. The temperature was about -5 the night before. The salinity at the surface in these protected coves is probably lower than average from runoff and there was no wind to stir things up. Average salinity seawater has to be about -2 to freeze. Another place I've seen freeze over regularly is Tod Inlet in Saanich Inlet.
