Purge masks do have their place. I do a lot of underwater habitat restoration work that requires me to be heads down for most of the dive, Divingscience. To rotate up in order to clear my mask would really hurt my productivity. For the vast majority of divers you are right. The purge valve is just another place to leak and I clean mine before and after every dive.
