hello all..
I bought a brand new mk25/s600 and took it on 4 dives so far.. it farted a lot in the beginning ..then towards the 4th dive, it farted only sometimes.. no one else could hear it (my buddy or the instructor) so i dont know if its just internal or what.. Whenever i exhale i hear this weird noise.. like brrrrt... more on the surface and near the surface than underwater.. if anyone else has heard of this pls let me know..
thanx

ps: my previous reg experiences have been with rental stuff so ive never actually heard this farting noise before.. I also used my friend's s600 before and never heard it either..
my viva was open to the max, and so was the other dial on the side..

First of all, I nominate this thread title for "most likely to make you look twice"!;)

Does the reg vibrate a bit a long with the noise? I use the same setup (except the mk20 which is just about the same) and while I do not have any vibration with the primary, my backup (r190) does vibrate at the surface and shallow depth. If I tuned it down it would stop, but it doesn't freeflow so I do not worry about it.

A friend's Mk25/D400 makes a similar "brrrrrrrrt" noise on the surface in the second stage. Underwater it disappears. Doesn't sound right, but the reg breathes fine, and the LDS insists it's normal. Personally I wonder if the intermediate pressure on the first stage is too high (both of his second stages freeflow at the drop of a hat), but that's an uneducated guess.

PS this is on the inhale

... ummm.. i dont know if my reg vibrates...do i feel it with my hand? my gloves are kinda thick.. heehee.. but.. next dive ill try to close the valves down a bit and hope it disappears.. my reg never freeflowed except when i was setting it up on the beach and some sand got in.. thanks guys

My Mares regulator exhibits the same behavior when it's dry. As soon as it hits the water the noise stops.

On a dive trip last weekend another diver's reg (ScubaPro) did the same thing, but much louder. The woman who it belonged to blushed mightily, but I gallantly exhaled into mine right away so that everyone would think it was me. ;)

Inhale noises, particularly when not in water, are fairly common with some regs when you don't have water dampening the air pressure changes inside the 2nd. This may be effected by adjustments of the balance knob or venturi control. My G500 will occasionally do that.

But you seem to be discribing an exhale noise. Are you sure your not just hearing the exhaust bubbles going by your ears. Among the few criticisms of the S600 is bubble dispersion. If not then the exhaust diaphram should be the next suspect. I'd have someone check it out to make sure there is not some type of defect there.

im gonna listen more carefully next time i go diving.... the shop told me it costs about $90 for a regulator 1st and 2nd stage checkup because every time they open it ..they hafta replace parts!!

Checking the exhaust diaphram should not require any parts replacement, unless they manage to break or lose something. Did you buy this reg from that shop or some other authorized dealer? If so, I would expect this problem to be resolved a no cost. Even if it is grey market, the cost should be much less.

give it some "BEANO" it may help with the farting ;)
