# of dives
I just don't log dives
Returned home yesterday after six days of diving at FI. Purpose of my trip was to become more comfortable in the water with repetitive dives while learning about the sites near FI and CCV, which is about 3 nautical miles west of home (Caribe Pointe Bight). I did 15 dives and GOAL ACCOMPLISHED. Only complaint is that I felt the boat was overly crowded, creating safety issues.

Had a great time. No dishes, No work… just dive - sleep - eat! :crafty:
Scubaboard members Bulrich, her spouse and teen daughter along with ucrtwf and wife Divertut were also at FI this week.

I discussed my one big complaint with Carlos Marin, the General Manager. Most of the time, our boat (Little Dan with DM Miquel and Capt. Steven) had 15-18 including one newly certified (only his 3rd dive) with buoyancy issues. This was too many in the water for ONE dive master to keep track of. And for the most part, he didn’t. The first dive the boat left the mooring to pick up divers who traveled too far and didn't turnabout, leaving several of us dangling in the right location in choppy seas for 15 minutes. Other times there was bumping and you had to work hard to avoid getting kicked when something cool was spotted.

I didn’t do the night dive, but several said it was a total disaster. There were 15 divers in rough seas getting in each other’s way on a poorly led adventure. One seasoned couple said it was the worst and most unsafe night dive they had ever done and this sentiment was echoed by others.

Also, the divemaster was going to skip the Calvin’s Crack site until a mutiny - one of the group told Manager Robert we all wanted to go. As mentioned by other posters, all dives were one tank and we returned to the dock after each, even Calvins, which was the furthest away. There were fresh tanks onboard already but the boat still returned to port.

Our boat and another of the boats broke down during the week. The day our battery went dead we were in rough seas for about 45 minutes. Fish got some chum that trip. But, hey, SHI_ happens! The Gen Mgr said the boats were crowded because one of the regular boats was not working. However, in the past they have leased an extra boat for the week and this could have been done. I don’t think there is any valid excuse for having more than 12 divers to a divemaster.

There was ALWAYS fresh fruit (pineapple, apples, watermelon) on the boat, towels and drinking water in a 5 gal bottle with pumper top. Hot showers at the dock are a real plus and I never worried about leaving gear in the open lockers. I wasn’t bothered by the no-seeums or sand fleas (maybe immune), but I noticed a few people were bitten up.

I’d have to dig deep to find anything to complain about as far as accommodations and food goes. I stayed in the first room (220) of newest wing and it was clean and comfortable. Air Con blew cold and always had hot water. Towels and water (in the small fridge) were replenished daily. Had some large tie wraps in my dive bag so I was able to fix the shower sprayer so it stayed “put”. Also purchased batteries for the TV remote as they couldn’t find any - - but those are non-issues.

Food was excellent all week and there was plenty of it. Dishes were tasty, seasoned with various spices with lots of variety. Plenty of fresh veggies (both raw and cooked) and desserts. Usually 2-3 flavors of ice cream at lunch and dinner. Service was awesome. The entire staff did an excellent job and went out of their way to please guests. The chef had promised turkey for Thanksgiving and he came through. Although dressing, mashed down taters, etc. was missing, the turkey was a nice touch. I had 4 island guests join us for dinner Thursday and they had no complaints. Two women who were guests in March returned this week and they said the food was much improved. The bar also had great service.

There were visitors (maybe the owners?) from Spain, so maybe we had better grub than usual. Whatever – it was great and I don’t see how anyone could complain about it.

Most of the dive sites were very good and the reef in robust shape. Like mentioned here before, you won’t see too many big fish on the southside. There were four large groupers near the top of the wall at the site near French Cay and one of these was the “goliath” (jewfish). They probably won’t be there long though – locals keep it fished out. We saw 6 or 7 lionfish during the week and the DM was able to kill two of them and bring them back.

A cold front brought rain Thursday night and now on Saturday it’s still raining. This hampered visibility on the two Friday morning dives and the boats didn’t go out Friday afternoon.

Management at FI reads Scubaboard and TripAdvisor so maybe when they see the complaint about the crowded dive boat, they will consider setting a limit or adding an extra DM when there are more than 12 divers. Kudos to FI for every other aspect! With the specials they run, you get great value for your money.

If anyone has any specifics to ask, please feel free to PM me.

Thank you for your trip report. We became Coconuts at Cocoview this past May but have decided to try FI due to the great special. We are going to be there Dec. 5-12th if anyone else wants to say hi. After looking at FI boats for the past 6 years how in the world did they get 15-18 divers on that boat with only rear exits? And if that is the case when we go it would be our last. That is one reason we don't travel to Cozumel anymore unless we dive with Allison. I do understand about a boat breaking down and it would be a bummer in rough sea's but it would not be a first.
It is good to hear about the food. I'm not real pickey but if its good it makes it easier.

One ? I have: Did you have to pay for your nitrox before you left or can you while you are there?

Thank you again for the report. 1 week and counting down.

Nice trip report. Sounds fairly similar to my experience two years ago. Maybe the food is better now. When I was there it wasn't that great. I don't like my bacon almost raw.

I was in one of the older buildings and will never again have accomodations like this. It was old and musty smelling. Beds were about worn out. Limited hot water.

The dive op could stand some improvement as well. Having enough guides doesn't bother me. We were given a choice of following him or going our own way. I dn't like crowds and I don't like being kicked so my buddy and I headed off on our own most of the time. I guess sme things never change. The boat broke down two days in a row on us with the same problem (fuel pump). You'd think that after we had to be towed in the first day they would have either fixed the problem or got us another boat. NOPE, got towed in the second day, too. And in doing so we got dropped off at the inlet to do the wreck (name?) for our second dive. Whoopie doo!!! The only consolation is that it is an interesting little wreck.

Usually I can put up with a lot of nonessentials and am not very demanding. The part that laid heavy with me is that I had my wife, mother, and daughter on this, their first Caribbean vacation and the experience left a lot to be desired. In fact, I've done 22 trips in the last 4 1/2 years and this was absolutely the worst "resort" I've ever stayed at and I won't be going back.

Roatan???? I'll be back because the reefs are very lively and interesting. Maybe I'll stay at CCV so I can thumb my nose at FI across the lagoon.

Hi. Actually the boats are huge and stable (although tired) and taking one big step at the rear to exit is easy and quite smooth. There is no problem whatsoever with the exiting on these boats. FI expects delivery of two new boats soon from Martinez, a local boat builder.

I didn't use Nitrox, but you probably can stop in the dive shop upon arrival and order it. They will accept cash or credit card there. You won't do your first dive until Sunday morning.

Thanks Castaway01 and CajunDiva. Thanks for your input. We look forward to our own experiance and can't wait for the diving.

Guys and galls, I've said it a thousand times... Fantassy island isn't a five star resort. It has lots of issues and to my standards is way under par to being a nice caribean resort. But most of it is "OK"... And when you consider the price you are paying... yes, remember those little numbers on your credit card slips?... The resort and diving experience become amazing!!!! There is no better deal, in the Caribean, in my oppinion. Please keep this in mind! If you do, you won't be disapointed... The only better place for the money I've been is the Philippines!

If quality of the resort/ dive operation is of upmost importance to you, please... do yourselves a favor and go elsewhere! And then fork out the cash that goes with it...

I am probably one of the most critical people on this planet. Every time I saw/tried something I didn't think was up to par, I just remembered the awesome deal I got and all of a sudden it wasn't that bad. Personally, I would never take a non-diver there, or a diver there to get his/her cert. for that matter. It's simply not a nice enough place (in my oppinion)! But to get a ton of diving in, at a great rate? You betcha!!!!:eyebrow:

Remember, you get what you paid for... Cocoview is right next door if you have higher standards... It is way nicer... and pricier...

Just my 0.02$:coffee:

Hi Codman, After 3 other trips this year my budget was short. Personal all I want to do is dive so the resort won't matter to much. I agree the price is the best deal going. I am not a pickey person and the only thing that gets me going is if someone is rude. We have been going to Cocoview for 5 years now and love it. But for a 4 dive trip of the year it was out of my price range. We hope for the best and from the review I don't think we will be disappointed. Merry Christmas everyone.
