We just stayed at FI in May with another couple. The rooms were fine, the food bland, but we could always find something to eat. We had a little problem with the toilet, but they always sent someone quickly to fix it.
The diving was great! I loved it! The sites were all very close. We dove on the Little Kem and our divemaster was Daren-if you can get him, do it! He was easy going, but safe. On our night dive, he promised we'd see an eel hunt & eat, and he delivered-very cool!

Both my husband and I and the other couple were very happy there and would go back.

2-Nitrox: If you plan to dive Nitrox, you absolutely need to check every single tank you take, despite what the dive shop tells you. It varied a lot over the week (from 26% up to 38%), when it was supposed to be only 32%. This is OK if you know in advance and personally analyse every tank yourself and set your limits accordingly.

Well the first rule of diving nitrox is that you always analyze your own tanks. Do they make available an analyzer for your use?

Hi,
Going to BIBR in May what problems are they having?

First hand, I don't know, these are the reasons I was given,

There was a general lack of basic maintenance, despite promises the problems (over severval years of complaints) would be corrected, food was better at FI and that the shore diving was better at FI. The last trip leader was also not happy with the conditions of the reefs and didn't feel that they would be providing a quality trip for the money. The consensus was to move to the south side of the island. Still doing two trips a year, just not to BIBR.

Yes, they had an Oxygen analyser and we used it for every tank. No problems there.

I drank bottled water exclusively, except at the diner table where I drank Iced tea. I got a slight case of the runs while there, but nothing to jeaopardise the diving. The souvenir shop sells bottled water and if I returned, I'd use it exclusively even for brushing my teath. Oh, I could use Salva Vida for that... :D:D

Is the water at fantasy island drinkable, or do you need to drink bottled?

Sorry, I don't know how many rooms there are in the new section. I asked for one when I booked. It you ask for an Unlimited Nitrox package when booking, it's cheaper (they don,t tell you this; I found out over the phone quite by accident). They charged 100$ per person for the entire week; unlimited Nitrox, even for shore/ night diving. great deal!

:coffee:

Thanks for the info, Roatan is high on my list for our next dive trip. My LDS just changed from Bay Island Beach resort to Fantasy Island for their Roatan trips due to problems at BIBR.

Just two quick questions. First, how many of the units are in the new section? Second, how much extra do they charge for Nitrox?

Yes, they had an Oxygen analyser and we used it for every tank. No problems there.

Next question, was it properly maintained and calibrated? If they don't change the sensors as needed, maybe that's why the readings were all over the map?

There was no info about calibration...:shakehead: Before every measurement, we checked it against a regular air tank, and it was always very close to 21%. That was the best we could do. This said, the profiles we were diving never brought us near the maximum depths for Nitrox up to 36%. Only once did I pop down to 99 feet, and obviously, I had 32% in my tank at the time and my computer adjusted accordingly. The reefs on the South shore of Roatan are shallow. Going much deeper doesn't really benefit you as far as critters go. The cool stuff was pretty much 60 feet and up.

Cheers!:coffee:
