Hello everyone-

Heading to Tahiti in November for a real vacation. Am definitely going to Rangiroa and Moorea (5 nights each) and am trying to choose another spot for 3-4 nights. Have decided to do something outside of Bora Bora and need a strong recommendation on another island or motu. Planning 6 dives on Rangiroa and 6 more on Moorea... anyone have experience with Fakarava or Raiatea?? Maupiti seems like a nondiving relaxation spot and I haven't ruled that out...

Lemme know!!!

The diving on Fakarava is a lot like Rangiroa. Lots of current through the pass and tons of fish / sharks.

Diving on Raiatea is a lot more mellow - more reef / wall diving instead of pass diving. Not as many sharks / fish , but still fun.

My personal choice would be Fakarava - its a special type of diving not found in many other places but if you are not into heavy current pass diving Raiatea may be a bettery choice.

The current diving that we've done was fun and an altogether different experience. We're by no means expert divers but we like passes and currents and aren't put off by depth.

We're really looking forward to Rangiroa and we're leaning in the direction of Fakarava. Another thing pushing in that direction is Air Tahiti: their flights aren't exactly convenient and getting to Raiatea from Rangiroa is a journey... Fakarava is a quick and cheap flight away and the place looks like it's been cut out of another world.

Thanks for the thoughts above.

We flew from Raiatea to Rangiroa. It really was not that much of a hassel. We had a 25 minute layover in Bora Bora. If you talk with a travel agent who specializes in Tahiti they will know all the trick to keeping the cost of the flights down. We flew from Minnesota to Tahiti to Raiatea to Rangiroa (via Bora Bora) and back to Tahiti they set us up with some sort of island hopping pass. So it was not more expensive than if we would have just gone to Bora Bora.

I think you will like the diving in Fakarava
