I'm part of a team called the Gasperados that has spent the last few years looking for the wreck of the USCG Tampa off the north coast of Cornwall. This small vessel was torpedoed on 26 Sep 1918 with the loss of 131 lives, making it the largest US naval combat casualty loss in World War I.
We've dived loads on unknown wrecks in our quest but without success. Following a lot more reasearch over the winter, on Tuesday we headed 38 NM offshore to dive an unknown mark in 90 metres of water with a high level of confidence that we'd soon solve the mystery.
Unfortunately our hopes were dashed (again) although we did find a small freighter that we were soon able to identify as having sunk in 1976. It was carrying a cargo of barrelled Herring that came loose in a storm and caused it to become unstable, and then sink!
