Got to dive a special-to-me wreck on the weekend that I have wanted to get to for a long time.
My great grandfather sailed on the freighter J Emory Owen as an oiler for the 1902 shipping season. He sailed for several years on several ships, but this is the only one with written documentation.
The J Emory Owen later became the F A Meyer and was cut open by ice and sank in western Lake Erie in 1909.
I can finally say that I got to dive on one of the ships that my great grandfather worked on. Saw the engine, boilers, etc.
Viz was as to be expected at this end of Lake Erie— crappy. But I did manage to salvage one photo from the murk.
