Hi Jan
Since no one more experienced has answered I'll try which might bring you to the top of the list again.

I have a Canon Powershot s50 in a WP DC300 case which has no connections for sinc cords or any of that stuff. But I am running an Ikelite Substrobe DS 50 with a manual controller. All it needs is that you mask the camera flash so that it does not over expose but still fires light upward to trigger the manual controller (another use for black electrical tape). You have to set manually (no TTL) but that is less of a challenge than correct aim.. I was advised that there were Inon options that worked the same way. I suggest you contact either of those companies, I did not find the websites had enough infor, try an email.

Cheers

Alison

You can look here for some strobe info...

Or you can contact Ike from Ikelite

Or contact Yuzo from Inon

I used my old Ikelite 50 with a manual controller with my Canon A70 for a long time. Didn't need to mask the flash and there are no controls...it was all a matter of strobe to subject angle & distance, but I got pretty good with it!

Thank you for your posts. I actually met a guy on the dive yesterday that has pretty much the same set up as I do, and he had a STROBE!!! So, he gave me all the info that I needed, so I am looking forward in getting one.

I had thought of calling Ikelite, but a friend of mine has had nothing but BAD customer service from them so I am not sure if I want to support them with my service.

Warm regards,

Mahalo

I would certainly not expect this from Ikelite. Ikelite is known for its superior customer service! I'm not saying bad customer service didn't happen from Ikelite, but I would think there would be more to the story.

Ikelite makes fantastic products and backs them up - sometimes even when it is user error. They also have a great support team to make sure you get exactly what suits your needs and to help you make the most of your rig.

I love Ikelite products, though I use an INON strobe at present, and will be buying more from them in the future without qualms. I currently have three Ike strobes and one Ike housing...never a problem (over 8 years!)

I wouldn't write them off from one bad report.

Just to clarify the Inon contacts:

Yuzo is a good person who runs a retail dive store in Japan. He is not an Inon employee, representative or spokesperson.

Purchasing gray market items is one option, but you forego the local warranty and service, meaning the product must be sent back to and returned from Japan at the customer's expense each time. Service after the purchase (especially for strobes) is important. Since such high level of service is what many users value we would think purchasing through manufacturer's local distribution would be preferred.

In regions where Inon is not represented though Yuzo would be a good choice.

I am currently evaluating a new strobe from Inon for my Cannon S500 (Digital Elph) that gives true TTL metering, and so far it is wonderful. As you know the pre-flash is what gives most strobes the "willies". Some use a "timing" protocol, but the Inon actually creates it's own pre-flashes to use the native TTL of the camera. Look for a gear report on it SOON. :D

Mark -
Thanks for that...I should have been more clear.

I think one can also buy INON (among other) products from Ryan of Underwater Camera Pros in the US - he is very knowledgeable and helpful in a wide range of UW photo products! Toll free #866.454.8927

Hello Alcina,
Yep, Ryan is good too - very knowledgeable about quite a few product lines. Thanks for recommending him.
Looking forward to Pete's evaluation report too.

Jan,

I have used Ikelite for service a couple of times (usually my error) and they have been great. I participate on a couple of boards and, generally, Ike gets very high marks for his customer service so I wonder if there is more to the story or if it is one of the exceptions that proves the rule. As far as retailers go, I have had nothing but great luck with Ryan at Underwater Camera Pros (www.uwcp.com). His service has been superbe not to mention his willingness to spend time with me on the phone answering my questions. Good luck in your search.
