There's quite a few places you can go alone on dive trips without paying a hefty singles supplement. I stayed at the hotel run by Aqua Safari in Cozumel and everything was reasonable. I went to Freeport in Bahamas alone too and found decent affordable rooms for a single. So it is possible but you have to do some research on rooms.

Married, single diver here.

I had a good time on a Blackbeard's cruise. Plenty of opportunities to partner up during the week.

I hooked up with a local dive shop and have met more divers. They'll put me with someone else who is traveling single and I've made some new dive friends.

In terms of hostils, I would never have thought that hostils would be conducive for divers who usually have expensive equipment ($$$$).

Any issues with missing equipment (BC, regs, gauges, puter, camera, etc.)?

Hostels often have cheap small rooms. It's not all dorm rooms that you share with people. But people tend to still congregate in the common areas.
