One major benefit of occasionally exhaling through you nose (especially as you get deeper), is that it keeps the blood capillaries in your eyes from bursting.

He did say "other than equalizing". I don't think that's what were talking about here, and I'm with msandler on this one. I've never been one to exhale through my nose when diving except to relieve squeeze or clear the mask, and doing so seems very wierd to me. Doesn't it make it hard to keep a good seal on the mask? I'd think the exhalation would pressurize the air space and cause the exhaled gas to force it's way out.

Do you rely on a tight mask strap to hold it against your face?
This is a new one to me.

Ive got a habit of exhaling through my nose unless i conciously thing about it. Doesnt cause any problems unless in the distant future i move to CCR :)

Only problem i find is gas leaving my mask gets inside my hood which eventually starts to float my hard and requires moving my head or hitting it to remove the bubble. In cold water i try not to move my head at all if i can help it to preserve the head so not ideal.

Some say mask fogs up easier but ive never experienced that.

This is what I have gotten out of this thread thus far

Purchase a low volume mask.
Purchase a higher quality mask
Check my mask strap tension
Take better care of my gear
More practice maybe even try a nose clip

I have several masks from low end to an average mask

US Divers Techisub LOOK with prescription lenses
Parkway Tru-View
Tusa Liberator plus
Body Glove retro 2
Dolfino

I could take better care of my gear but I don’t feel this is directly causing my issue. As you can see from the pic that my masks are in pretty decent shape.

Thanks for helping me find out that exhaling thru my nose is not necessarily a problem as other divers experience this as well. I really appreciate everyone’s feed back and solutions to try and resolve my little fizzle issue.

Yes I think my mask strap is tighter than most people would wear there’s. Most of my dives is like a set it and forget it dive when it comes to my mask. I can do beach and boat dives with out ever having to adjust or clear my mask on a dive unless my mask unexpectedly gets kicked off my face by my dive buddy. I did have a problem on my last dive when my buddy and I exchanged masks underwater so he could show me the fizzles coming out of my mask. When I went to try and put it back on I had one hell of a time getting that strap over my hood.

LMAO

did you try the purge and loosening the strap ? as suggested, just wondered because seems strange you can blow out lenses and if a cure has been found

I have not tried a purge mask yet but I did loosen the mask strap and that seemed to help a lot. I think I might be wearing my mask strap extremely tight on all of my masks causing the mask to put unnecessary pressure against my face. In order to relive some of the pressure from my mask I’m unconsciously exhaling thru my nose. Since my masks have always been very tight my buddy noticed I never pinch my nose to equalize on dives as I can do this just by apply pressure thru my nose.
