Actual with Chuck (Schwab) the minimum balance is $0 and the monthly fee is $0 and the dreaded foreign transaction fee is 0%. The exchange rate is very close to FOREX. I have nothing in the accompanying brokerage account but if I do decide to gamble in the markets (other than my 401K) I will use them out of loyalty, which I believe is their intent. I only use the account for travel and they see my frequency and they don't lock it out for bouncing around locations (once it happened and 5 minutes on the phone and the locks came off the account). I like having a fire-walled pre-funded account that is not tied to my savings in my primary account

What I read said that the Schwab checking account ist $25 per month and required a significant deposit. Now that I'm looking again it says it's "None." Now I wonder what the heck I was looking at. Perhaps it was a higher-interest-earning account.

Does this look like the account that you have?

Charles Schwab Bank High Yield Investor Checking

Meanwhile, I called CaptialOne and they said yes, you have to pay the on-site ATM fee but no other transaction or ATM fees. The catch is that I won't be able to easily send money to friends that share the same credit union. Instead I'll need to use Zelle which, as far as I can tell, only works on iPhones and Androids, neither of which I have.

That is the one the high yield checking account, if you get one be honest and let them know you will be funding and using it for foreign travel. They are OK with it and can code it for travel. 'I like Chuck' (they have done me good) but I have heard that Fidelity has an equivalent offer.

52 responses to “how much is the exchange rate in mx”. Incredible.

So, that is not the account you have? I didn't read all the fine print yet but it sounds like "no fees." Do you have a link to the account you have and like?

Yes, that is exactly what I saw. Or didn't see. I paid no attention to the column in blue, on the left. It simply didn't register in my mind because it didn't appear to be one of the choices. Perhaps I need some "advertising awareness" training. What I did see was the first column on the left with the minimum of $10K and $25/month. Based upon what you had said in the past the first column is what I expected to see. Non-photo-blue vision, perhaps.

So, now that I am considering spending a lot more time in Mexico I'd better get busy. I'm leaning toward CapitalOne only because I'm familiar with them and they have always come through for me. I'll read the fine print and see what the differences are. Does Schwab refund the on-site fees from the ATM machines in Mexico, typically $25-$30- pesos? I think you had mentioned in the past that they refund all the fees.

Thanks for posting this info and for smacking me upside the head to wake me up!

Which is why I do not use HSBC OR Scotia. Even though Schwab picks up the fee, I think it is excessive

BBVA is even higher - $80 pesos, IIRC. The $68 pesos includes some tax, so the actual fee works out to about $3.00 USD. By taking out the maximum allowed withdrawl ($7,000 pesos at HBSC) it's a small percentage.

Do you know of someplace with a lower fee?
