I was in a race from Marina Del Rey to San Diego. It usually takes us 27 hours and that generally means we win our class. After 27 hours we were still 40 nm from San Diego with a boat speed of around 1 knot. We decided to drop out and motor in ... but the outboard would not start. We were forced to sail and as a result won the race ... a day later.

The funny part was that I decided to try to fix the outboard. I removed the cowling only to realize I knew nothing about outboards, least of all what the various things I found inside it were. Note: Removing the cowling did not let the gremlins which were keeping it from starting escape and leave.
