I had my gear serviced in April. In order to keep the lifetime warranty on my aqualung reg I went to the same shop I bought the reg from. While the equipment was at the shop they addressed a problem of a pin size leak on my inflator hose were it connects. The shop called me and convinced me it could not be fixed and instead sold me a new inflator and also inflator hose.

When getting the gear back I probably made a mistake by not filling a tank and testing it. However I felt this should have been done by the shop. As soon as I turned the air on before my first dive I heard hissing which at first I thought was a leak. But then I saw that my BC was about to fly away filling faster than could be dumped.

No one at the divesite was able to fix the problem although they did suggest several causes. I called the shop and they told me I had two options to scrub the dive or to manually inflate. (like i didn't think of that). I did my dives and did manually inflate and all was well.

Sorry for being so long winded but my main question is; is it to harsh for me to ask for some kind of credit at the shop as well as them obviously fixing it? I drove two hours to the dive site and if I would have been less experienced would not have dove.

I don't know if a credit is in order, but they should certainly fix it correctly.

but, if it was really a pinhole leak in the inflator hose, why ever would they sell you an inflator? Unless I'm missing something it sounds suspiciously like a ripoff.

BTW, you don't have to go to the same shop you bought the reg from to keep the warranty. (If they told you that, sounds like another attempt at a ripoff.)

Damselfish,
I know the warranty can be transfered to another shop which I will probably do. The leak was very small and after 50ft was non-existant. I just took their word that it could not be fixed. The situation also makes wonder if they just slaped the inflator hose on and never checked it. I mean the filling of the BC was obvious and the noise was there as well.

The reason I ask about credit is that at the park I dove I had already paid. And on top of that a two hour drive.

I don't understand why the shop replaced the inflater in the first place or just what was leaking that could not be repaired. Perhaps you could provide more explanation.

At best, the shop did a poor job on the repair. I think I'd be looking for another shop.

The shop claimed one of the reason it could not be fixed was that my seaquest BC had a odd sizzed inflator hose connection. I am layman about a lot of the equipment so bare with me on discriptions. In other words the male end of my inflator on my BC could not be matched up with a hose of theirs off of my second stage. Does that make more sense awap?

scubaaron,
I'm confused- was it the low pressure inflator hose attached to your regulator or the corrugated hose assembly on your BC? If it's the hose on your regulator then a hole in that really can't be fixed. What makes your connection different? Do you have an integrated octo on your BC? I'm just trying to understand what was serviced.

In either case the shop should ensure that the repair is done correctly. In the shop I work with every reg that comes in for service is given to the customer and hooked up to a tank and tested by the customer before they leave the shop to ensure that all parts are working as designed.

There were some odd configuration connectors but they could usually be removed from the inflator and replaced with a std connector. I take it they did not return the old parts to you. You might ask for them back but don't expect they will find them. Leaking connectors are usually repairable. Leaking hoses must eventually be replaced. Sounds like they may not have wanted or been able to work on the SQ gear so they just did the replacement (on your dime of course).

Hank it is the corrugated hose. And I do have the old parts. I just spoke to the tech and he says some debris may have got in there. I told him the stuff is kept in a closet in my home.

The tech also stated that it was taken right out of the manufactures rap. He swears they tested it.

OK, corrugated hoses get holes in them and , while I might be tempted to repair my own, a shop is understandably going to replace it. But that should not be a reason to replace the inflator and LPI hose.

And this is why I don't take my regs/gear in to be serviced every single year. I find most issues occur right after the item has been to s dive shop. Of course, you had to take it in because it was broken. In most cases, when it comes to dive gear, if it's not broke, don't try to fix it.

All that said, something is not right here...

Your word against them. Deal with them or go elsewhere unfortunately is the answer. Good luck!
