Is anyone aware of a web site or other location where one can learn about the basic operation and construction of regulators and BCDs? I would like to read up on these items to allow for an objective and informed decision. It would be nice to know the difference between unbalanced and balanced pistons and how each affects the performance of regulators, and so on. Thanks for any information.

You could also look at the PADI encyclopedia of recreational diving in a shop, or pick up a copy of it in book or multimedia format... it's not the greatest resource (from what I've gone through for DM training thus far) but some of it is good... I seem to recall learning something about regulators (don't remember what) that I had read about many times, but still never grasped, due to the better explanation in the video about how they work (multimedia format)

There are a few animations and general blurbshere.

The text book for the Equipment Specialist class has a pretty good section on regulators and all other equipment. There are drawings and descriptions that can tell the difference between Piston and Diaphram regs, balanced vs. Unbalanced, tanks, tank valves, BC inflators and most other stuff.

Get the PADI Encyclopedia. It has over 100 pages of information about equipment and is a great resource for many other diving related activities.
