Emoticons, Smilies, & Emojis
Why use any of them?
We use simple phrases all the time that can be interpreted in many different ways. Person to person conversation is augmented by context, common cultural experience, intonation, and body language. Unfortunately, you can't depend on any of these on public Internet forums. You might "think" you are replying to a familiar member, but you would be forgetting about the thousands of other people that will read it, literally over years. These little images can impart some of the intent behind your comment, add visual interest, or add some levity.
Emoticons
Emoticon is short for "emotion icon" or emote, is a pictorial representation of a facial expression using characters. It's not unreasonable to ask:What the heck is :-) ;-) supposed to mean? Just turn them sideways:
Smilies are predefined on ScubaBoard so they are easy to insert and will display consistently on all computing platforms. You can insert them from the Smilie-Face menu:
You can also enter Smilies using their substitution text. Some of the more common Smilies use Emoticon text strings such as the first one below:
= :)
=
=
See ScubaBoard, Help, Smilies for a full list with the substitution text.
There is an "Auto-complete" feature if you know the Smilie code, or can guess at it:

Emojis
Emoji support is new to ScubaBoard 2021. They are found below the Smilies under the People heading.Inserting emojis from other sources may not display correctly in ScubaBoard, or at all, across all operating systems, language settings, and devices. Other than these built-in emojis, they are also not standard across all computing platforms. Example:
The lightbulb images are "close enough" for most purposes but many emojis can be quite different. Emojis have been added below the Smilies menu to solve this dilemma.
