Emily Strikes

"We decided to evacuate Akumal, not taking any risks from a category 4 storm. With 12 volunteers and staff we began the journey west, to Palenque, completely out of harms way. The tremendous trees which surround us in this tropical forest have served as an inspiration for our work, they are so strong and full of love, providing life to so many species of plants, birds, insects and other creatures, as they stand tall among the clouds, whispering of the Mayan past and looking to us for a long future. Now, we are getting back to work, back to the coastal jungle and tropical reef that received the first hit from Emily, but not to protect, to clean, assess and rebuild. We need the help from all our supporters, now more than ever. We will send out a message as soon as we evaluate the damage and let you know what we need. The immediate communication we have already received from so many people is heartwarming and has strengthened us for the task ahead."

Emily Relief Funds

We have set up two emergency relief funds:
1 Support for CEA rebuilding To assist with:
CEA Staff housing and volunteer dorms are badly damaged.
Two out of three buildings will have to be rebuilt and refurbished. In the meantime, 6 CEA staff need a roof over their heads (literally). Also, our mantainance staff (4) who live in the Pueblo have lost most or all of their houses, they will need materials to be able to rebuild.

CEA Center and offices
Mostly water damage, computers seem to be fine, but have not been tested because we have no electricity. Desks are ruined.

CEA Future
To get back to work asap, we need to buy a generator and do some plumbing repairs. That will be done this week. We need to build a cistern for storing rainwater. We are looking into solar energy installations as well. The Center will need new exhibits and windows.

2 Support for the Akumal Pueblo. A fund to assist the Akumal Pueblo community. We will provide a list of what the money will be spent on once we have a chance to assess the situation first hand.
