I'm on vacation in Mexico with my new EM-5 and NA-EM5. The cap on the "main dial" on the camera popped off. It isn't obvious how it was attached - I suspect a two-sided ring that was only partially there. I would like to glue the cap back on the camera, but don't want to invalidate the warranty. So far, email to Olympus has been unanswered. Anyone want to call them for me and ask them if it's OK to superglue the cap back on the camera?

I've used a small piece of duct tape to temporarily keep the cap on the dial.

Report on the camera and housing to follow when I return home. I like them!

I called Olympus when I got home from work and just missed talking to right people by minutes. I talked to a nice person named Lilly. I guess I just missed the customer service people who answer the question about the warranty. She did give me a number to call though:
1 800 201-7766
option 2
then option 3.
I'll try to call for you tomorrow.

Jim,
No go on the adhesive/super glue, it will void the warranty. I talked to a guy named Rock in customer service at Olympus and he checked with the tech's there. They said they are afraid of adhesive/super glue running down the shaft and seizing other things making dis-assembly for repair impossible. He also said the west coast facility is still closed for when you get back. You'll have to send it to NY.
I guess a new piece of tape every day will have to suffice. Maybe there is double sided tape you can find (spanish is: Cinta de doble cara)?

May the force be with you!

Joe,

I'm in your debt. By doubling over a piece of duct tape, I've been able to keep the cap on the dial. I did pick up a package of two-sided tape at Chedraui. That's too bad about the SoCal repair facility - I could drive there from home. I guess a visit to UPS is in store for me when we get home.

If you ever need a favor...

Dive safely and often,
Jim

Hi Jim,

Have you determined what caused the cap to pop off?

A buddy of mine had his shutter cap pop off due to the plunger on his Ikelite housing being either misaligned or not fully retracted when he shut the case. He used also used duct tape as a short term fix until he got it repaired. I wonder if DAN equipment insurance would cover this if not covered under warranty?

I hope you are able to get some terrific images regardless and look forward to your trip report.

Hi Jim,

I would also be interested to know how this happened since I have the same system and I am about to travel again. Did you transport the equipment to Mexico with the camera in the housing?

I hope you are having a great time and get lots of cool stuff for us to see.

Phil,

The camera was in the housing and functioning correctly, as it had been doing for two weeks of diving. When I turned the housing's dial to adjust the shutter speed in Manual Mode, it turned freely. When I opened the housing, the camera's main dial cap was loose in the housing.

I cannot determine how the cap was attached to the camera - nothing appears to be broken. Under the cap is part of a white ring. I strongly suspect that this should have been a compete ring of two-sided tape...like the little ones we used to use to reinforce the holes in three-hole paper. If so, this was a manufacturing defect as only part of the adhesive was there.

The housing's dial that controls the main dial on the camera may have played a role in it's detachment. When you get to the end of the shutter speed adjustment, further turning of the housing dial may have added torque to the cap and caused it to pop off. In any case, be careful to note which way it turns and don't go past the upper or lower limite to be safe.

I folded some duct tape over on itself and pressed the cap back on the camera. It's holding for the time being.

No, I carry my camera in my backpack, not the housing on the plane.

Hello,
I just joined the board so I could respond. I have a new EM5 (2 months old) that I think is a perfect digi camera - and I've owned many. I was crestfallen last night when my barely used main dial just 'released' its grip and spun off. It's a shockingly bad design for such a masterpiece. The metal cap has no teeth or grooves to provide counter force and support the glue they use. Ridiculous! I took the camera back to the shop and they're sending it off to Olympus (I'm in NYC, so hopefully a quick round trip). It looks like this will be an issue for all owners, the mode selector dial is held on the same way, so I fully expect it to release one day as well. Other than this, the camera is the real deal, it handles like a nice film camera. Love it!

Anyway, just thought I'd mention my experience as this has nothing to do with a housing or user abuse.

Cheers and happy diving!
