I've just completed the Dive Theory online, and just yesterday picked up the DM crew pack.

I was talking with the girl at the shop, and she said that even though I have the full book, I am also required to do the eLearning DM course, and the book is only needed for the first chapter.

On the DM application, under 'Knowledge Development', there are check boxes for eLearning completing, but I guess this is optional if I've done that section using the book?

The PADI website suggests that I can do either the eLearning or the book+ dive theory online.

Could someone clarify this? Seems pretty cash-hungry, even by PADI's standards.

Why do so many people confuse their shop with PADI?

Hello helios,

The PADI Divemaster Manual is required. Every DM student (eLearning and non-eLearning) must attend an instructor-delivered presentation for Knowledge Development Topic 1 – The Role and Characteristics of a PADI Divemaster. If you are taking the eLearning course, then the remaining Knowledge Development sections are done online. eLearning is NOT required by PADI for Divemaster. If your dive shop choses to have all DM candidates take the eLearning, that is their decision, not a requirement by PADI. Your completion of the Dive Theory online course allows you to get credit for Part 2 of the final exam...it is not required.

If you picked up your Divemaster Crewpack then you should have the PADI Instructor Manual. This manual outlines the requirements for the PADI Divemaster course and the required materials.

Exactly..Also by completing "dive theory online" it saves classroom time ( as much as 16 to 20 hours) as the instructor does not have to spend as much time going over the information. If you prefer instructor led presentations that is ok but be prepared to pay more for the course. You also should read completely the encyclopedia of diving and diving knowledge workbook, and know how the instructor manual works for finding standards and procedures. If you feel reading all materials and viewing online material too much then you should rethink if you truly want to be in the dm program. Becoming a DM is a serious endeavor requiring time and $$$$ and not be taken lightly. You should not get a pass for just paying a fee and taking up space. You have work to do to earn it.

Helios,

One of the things I do with my DM students, and something you should consider, is that I make them responsible for standards, not only their own, but also for all the teaching they are involved in with me. Now of course I still have to oversee it, because I can't shirk my responsibility. You have the DM crew pack now, so you should be able to answer these questions and you should make sure that you are getting the full monty out of your class, and IMO you should make sure that your instructors are meeting all their standards with all of their students -- it's part of being a "professional." Also, if you plan to continue on to an IDC and IE one of the biggest favors you can do for yourself is "RTFM," and the sooner that starts the better off you'll be.

Good luck with your class!
