I recall some years ago there was a group doing winter dives out here, any of that still going on?.. or did they finally get their wits about them ?

I don't know about Edmonton but I know divers in Calgary that are cutting holes in lakes to get some bottom time in.
Wing divers may still do winter diving, check through the Dive Outfiters.
Dive Outfitters still does an ice dive weekend once a year. Northwest Scuba probably does as well.
