I've just returned from a family vacation in San Jose del Cabo and can't say enough good things about Lars, Luis and Daniel at East Cape Explorers in San Jose! The shop is clean and inviting and the rental gear is organized and well maintained, although I had my own gear so I didn't personally use any rental gear (other divers did and all were happy with the quality, etc.). The dive boat is in great shape and is well maintained by Daniel. And as an added bonus Nitrox is available at no additional charge - awesome!

I dove 4 days / 8 dives with Luis (DM) and Daniel (Boat Cpt) and every single dive was good. Dive sights ranged from shipwrecks to deep blue water to really interesting fjord dives along the big cliffs near Chilano Bay. Marine life was quite abundant at times - eels, tuna, octopus, scorpion fish, puffers, trumpet fish, rays, and a lot more. On the surface we witnessed tons of activity with dolphins jumping (I counted 30 at one point) and ....are you ready for this?.... dozens and dozens of humpback whales making their way along the coastal waters with their offspring, often times cubs and adults breaching completely out of the water - crazy!

This was my first trip to the Sea of Cortez and I will definitely be back to dive with East Cape. I have mixed feelings about writing this review for all to see; the guys at East Cape really deserve praise for their expertise, professionalism and likeable demeanor...however I'd almost like to keep East Cape a secret (selfish, I know) as they will undoubtedly become busier as word spreads of the great diving and more importantly in my mind, their exceptional service.

Oh, and on top of it all they shared with me the local's favorite carnitas restaurant in downtown San Jose. Simply could not of had a better experience.....!

Thanks for the tip. I looked at San Jose before and was unable to find any dive shop there, which is why we ended up going to Cabo San Lucas instead. Maybe next time then.

East Cape has only been open for about 6mos (?) - they have a sister shop in San Lucas but honestly, these guys are fantastic. Professional, laid-back, all good.....try them next time you're in San Jose.

Cheers!

Great write up. I will be travelling to Cabo in a few weeks, staying at the Hilton in between San Jose Del Cabo and Cabo proper. Do you recall what the water temp was when you dove? How thick was your wetsuit?

How did you like the diving here? How was the sea life? I'm contemplating diving in this area for the first time and want to see if it is worth it. I've dived Cancun and Cozumel a few times and it was decent I'm wondering how this would compare.

Thanks
Dave
