I have been diving for about a year but within the past few months I have developed a pulsating noise in my right ear. It is very distracting at times and keeps me awake. I know it has to do with diving because I didn't have it before diving. Any ideas of the cause or how to correct it?

Hi Mermaid,

No fun.

1. Can you more precisely date its onset?
2. Have you had any instances of squeeze or reverse squeeze? Any possible damage to the ear that you can identify?
3. Are there any other signs or symptoms such as muffled hearing, feelings of fullness within the ear, ringing or buzzing, or discharge from the ear?
4. Are you been experiencing allergies, a cold or other condition that produces congestion?

I wish I could tell you when this started. It seems like months ago maybe since I was in Cozumel in December but it wasn't bad then. I stopped diving between December and April of this year and when I started again it has gotten worse. I always have trouble with loss of hearing after I dive sometimes significant loss for a couple of days. No ringing or buzzing, no discharge. I am in good health, no colds or allergies to speak of. I will tell you however that since Cozumel I have had to have lupron injections for 6 months. That is the only difference I have had in the past 6 months. Thanks for the help

What did your Ear-Nose-Throat or Dive Doc say about it when you went to have it checked? What did the Doc say about your pulsating ears and side effects or interactions when he prescribed Lupron? I do know that pulsating in the ear can be a sign of several things...some of them not so nice if left untreated. Six months is too long...see a Doctor if you have not done so already.
