Hi,

Seen several references to vinegar. Which type? I have used the white vinegar as the part of my 50/50 solution. Thanks.

Distilled white probably best.

DocVikingo:
When was the last time you purchased Otic Domeboro and what is the expiration date on the bottle?

Thanks,

DocVikingo

Doc,

I have not actually purchased any of this solution. Just checked for price and availability at a local pharmacy,

That's very interesting, Paul, as last time I checked with the manufacturer (Bayer) they indicated that production was ceased in Dec '00. Remaining stocks were to be sold, but likely would be quite dated now even if you could locate some. Company had no plans to remarket this or a similar product at that time.

Does your pharmacy have this actual product? Perhaps they have a substitute of some type or are willing to formulate it for you?

Thanks for checking into it.

Doc,

Not sure what the pharmacy has on hand - it has become a moot point for me since I have decided to use an alcohol / vinegar / glycerin solution for now. I understand the U.S. Navy is still using the Domeboro solution (or some version of it), so someone is still making it.

To the best of my knowledge, Otic Domeboro is no longer being commercially manufactured nor commercially available.

It was composed of 2% acetic acid in a modified Burrows solution of water, aluminum acetate & sodium acetate with boric acid as a stabilizer. As such, the US Navy easily could have a supplier make such a formulation. Or, they could use an equivalent. Whether they in fact are I cannot say.

Best regards.

I've got a bottle of B&L Acetic Acid 2% in aqueous aluminum acetate otic solution (NDC 24208-615-77)
Exp 9/05

Active: acetic acid 2%
Inactives: aluminum acetate (formed from aluminum slufate, calcium carbonate, glacial acetic acid), boric acid, sodium hydroxide and purified water. Sodium hydroxide and/or glacial acetic acid may be added to adjust pH (3.5-5.0)

My doc (military, not a diver) said it was equivalent to Domeboro's but I don't have an old bottle of Domeboro's so I don't know. Seems to work well--used it on my last l/a trip.

How close is this or is it just snake oil?

IMHO, that is a most excellent equivalent. Whatever benefits Otic Domeboro may have provided, this should do likewise.

Best regards.

Thanks for the expert opinion. Some of the technical terms were different enough that I wasn't sure. But it does seem to work. Now all I need to do is dive more!

Doc, Seems to me that one should be careful that the solution one puts in their ears be sterile...Do you agree? Or do you think it is okay to use the 50/50 solution of white wine vinegar and isopropyl??
