I have gotten a few messages from people that this has worked for. When I started diving I could not clear my ears the regular way of plugging my nose and blowing. What worked for me was when I felt the pressure I would exhale into my mask increasing the air density. This for some reason would allow me to swallow. Thus poping my ears. Without exhaling through my nose in my mask I could not swallow, well I still could swallow but there was no poping in my ears. Hope this helps for the people who can not equalize the regular way like myself.

I strongly suggest that every diver or potential diver go to;
http://faculty.washington.edu/ekay/index.html
and watch the streaming video;
"Streaming Video Lecture
"The Diver's Ear - Under Pressure"

Scuba diving and snorkeling can be fun ways to explore the depths - especially if you can clear your ears as the pressure changes. In this video lecture Dr. Edmond Kay discusses techniques for preventing middle ear barotrauma. Learn what to do to equalize pressure in your ears, teach others proper techniques and learn the safest way to prevent "ear squeeze". This talk was recorded live in September, 2000 and is now available for Internet viewing over the University's video portal . "

Lots of information and demonstrations of equalizing technique, also some pics of what happens when you get it wrong.

If you're planning to watch, you need to be able to spare an hour (so I guess I won't be watching this one from work :wink: )

I have a friend who says that he cannot clear his ears.

is it more likely that he can, but may just need to experiment with technique?

I have found that it is easier each time I dive. does that mean it could get better with practice for my friend?

thanks
