I too have had ear problems including difficulty in equalizing. The Dive Doctor in Cozumel helped me out the first time it occurred. I had almost burst my eardrum!! I now always take prednisone for about 4 days before diving and it has made a huge difference. I've already been to ear specialists and had all kinds of tests. The specialist said it was Ok to use the prednisone before diving. I also use Sudafed when I fly. However, most of my diving is in MX which doesn't allow that drug AT ALL! So, that means I can only use it on my flight there but not on the flight home. The specialist also suggested that I equalize on and off during the day even when I'm not diving. So far, all this works pretty well. I still go slowly when I am going down into the water which also helps.
