NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jul 11 - Researchers have confirmed the presence of mucosal biofilms in chronic middle-ear otitis media through direct analysis of biopsies from affected children, supporting the hypothesis that biofilms are responsible for these chronic ear infections.
Cultures of middle ear effusions frequently don't grow bacteria, even though metabolically active bacteria are found to be present, Dr. Garth D. Ehrlich and associates note in their article in the Journal of the American Medial Association for July 12.
This phenomenon suggests that otitis media may result from a mucosal biofilm infection, Dr. Ehrlich, from the Center for Genomic Sciences in Pittsburgh, and his team indicate. They define biofilms as "aggregated bacteria, usually adherent to a surface, surrounded by an extracellular matrix." They are recalcitrant to antibiotic treatment even though the isolated bacteria are susceptible to antibiotics.
