Scuba Diver Dead After Diving Eagle Wreck Off Islamorada
KEY LARGO (CBSMiami) – A scuba diver who was found unconscious in the water while diving the Eagle wreck off Islamorada has died.

Robert Wayne Burns, 67, was diving with a local charter when he was found unresponsive in the water. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was called at around 9:30 a.m. and they attempted CPR on Burns.

A responding Coast Guard crew took Burns to Bud N’ Mary’s Marina. From there, Burns, a New Jersey native, was taken to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier where he was declared dead shortly after.

Investigators are still awaiting an autopsy report, but deputies don’t suspect foul play.

I'm sorry to hear this.

The Eagle is one of my favorite sites. Any more news? Which Dive Shop? Key Dives operates from that marina.
I was thinking the same thing. But maybe that was just the closest marina for the Coasties to do the transfer to the hospital?

Chatter on the sheriff's FB page says the operator was Key Dives: https://www.facebook.com/pg/floridakeyssheriff/posts/

The chatter is not moderated and posts vary greatly. One reported " I was on that dive. It was not at the Eagle wreck. It was in 20 feet of water, and the diver was at the surface when he became unresponsive. The dive crew followed all protocol and did their absolute best in this emergency situation."

Sounds like it may have been at the “Morada” dive site given the depth and proximity to the Eagle.
