the new Cozumel Ocean Research project and Blue Core (a project out of Playa del Carmen) are teaming up on an Eagle Ray project to track the movements and populations of Eagle Rays.
In Campeche they apparently fish Eagle Rays, this research will help with controlling the numbers of fish taken among other important Eagle Ray research & farming. (I had no idea that people farmed Eagle rays, but apparently they do)
Our on-island correspondent, Julie Davenport of Dive Paradise has made 2 interviews with the folks heading up this exciting project that all us Cozumel (Maya Riv.) divers can get involved in.
quite simply, take pictures of Eagles from the top, getting the entire animal in frame and send them to Blue Core along with information on what site you saw it/them on, including what day and time. Even if you don't have a camera, just letting them know when and where you saw an Eagle is helpful.
Eagle ray spot patterns are unique to that animal, like a fingerprint and cataloging photos of individuals will help determine the travel patterns of these animals who travel from as far away as Florida to Coz.
here's a link to the English version of the Blue Core website: Blue Core
Also listen to the station during he 9am, Noon, 3pm and 6pm hours to hear Julie's entire interviews ( both just a little over 6 min) to get the full lowdown ... Cozumel Radio - Always on Island Time
Let's all get together and make this a very successful project!! THANKS!
