My girlfriend and I will visit Bali this spring. And she will be taking the open water course as soon as we get there.

It would be a shame for her to have to be trapped indoors for the better part of a day watching videos and doing book work. I was hoping she could do the book and videos through padi e-learning so she could get straight in the pool/water.

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this? Was the scuba shop accomodating? Do they reduce the price of the open water course?

Any thoughts/advice welcome.

Thanks.

Andy

I started with PADI e-learning. I think it was OK. A bit monotonous but you could break it up and do it at your own pace rather than suffering from "classroom fatigue".
You'll need to contact the actual dive-shop as some will discount and some won't.

My daughter did her OpenWater through PADI eLearning and did the water skills and dives at a dive resort in the Philippines. I think it was more convenient, but it was not cheaper because we still bought the RDP, training logbook and and manual kit from the PADI resort. Recommended for convenience, not savings in cost ( in my experience).

E-learning is worth it. I did mine in 2011 while in Afghanistan and did the open water in Cyprus. Find a shop before doing the course and make your arrangements, you can select them when you start the course and they'll receive a notification when you've completed it. Some shops break the fee for the classroom and water training down separately, I know my LDS charges $200 for each so by completing the online course you'd only be paying for half the course, like mentioned above it's dive centre specific.

I've only taken a Nitrox class via e-learning but I liked it. I could read at my own pace, re-read if necessary, and not have to slow down or speed up for anyone else's pace. Plus I found a lot of issues with the particular course I did and got to be part of making the process better for future people taking the course so I felt like I "gave a little back".

Best advise would be to complete academics and confined (pool0 requirements BEFORE the trip..this way all she has to do is 4 enjoyable dives. As to the course being less expensive if elearning,it is up to the facility. In a group setting we do not discount the course. In a private schedule,1 to 1 class, fee drops from $600. for acad/pool to $500.if elearning is utilized.

My girlfriend did her Open Water via e-learning, first experience I'd had of it, great system, well structured but no substitute for class room session with an instructor.

In my opinion her grasp of the theory was not up to standard, I had her daughter and my son do classroom sessions.

Thanks for all the advice. Unfortunaltly the dive shop doesn't give a discount, but she'll be giving the e-learning a try.
