Is anyone using this camera in an Ikelite (or other) housing? I am thinking about upgrading my E-330 rig, and wondering whether the image stabilization makes any difference for underwater photography.

Hi Rick,

I am moving from the E-410 in an Olympus housing to the E-3 in a Nexus housing. I have used the I.S. on both the E-510 & E-3, it works great out of the water for longer lenses. I don't think it will make enough of a difference underwater to make the change for that reason only. Image quality wise, large difference. If you use live view only stay with the E-330.

Are you saying the image is better with the 510 or 330? What differences are there?

Rick, I'm just guessing that's your e330 housing up on ebay from the name similarity? So I guess you made your choice. :) (BTW, I'm the guy bidding - hope I don't get too much competition and we're both happy with the sale / purchase price, respectively. ;) )

Yoda, Phil's posted a lot on wetpixel too about the differences between the 330 and 410/510 image. Besides more pixels the sensor is a newer generation, after all. I do however think the 410 and 510 use the same sensor and image processor, although the 510 adds the stabilization shift and some more control gradation.

I'll check it out over there. Thanks.

Yoda, I should have clarified, Phil is "tropical1" on wetpixel.

Here's the main thread I recall:

What Olympus DSLR set-up would you recommend for me? - Wetpixel :: Underwater Photography Forums

Not to put words in his mouth, but I believe it boiled down to the newer 10MP vs. 8MP sensor, smaller/lighter, and better low-light focus performance, and some improved high-ISO performance as to the improvements over the E330. Phil is a big proponent of using FO connections for strobes to the Oly housing, and does not really use the liveview much, preferring the OVF. But I did see him say if LiveView was the PRIMARY consideration (and only if) then he'd recommend sticking with the E330.

Me, I need that crutch...I can't even get my face up to an OVF with my bugeye Hydrooptix mask, and adding a big external viewfinder enhancement negates the cost advantage of the Oly housings and FO vs. Ikelite and their TTL, for me. ;)

I saw the housing for sale and I was wondering who was selling, and who was bidding. I hope you get it.

The IS should make no difference UW---@ least in the Canon A series it does not, from what I'm told......

i 've got a E-510 and i did 't see any difference with IS U/W.

Thanks, Gus. I'm kind of a dead giveaway - same name here as on ebay, although I guess for the starting price they suppress the IDs now. Oh noes, I just 'outed' myself! :D

jf et al: regarding IS, I'm not sure if you'd notice a difference or not. Supposedly IS gains you a stop or so of 'light' by allowing a tad more exposure time without showing the shake. But underwater the motion is generally going to be more of a wander than an actual 'shake'. I'd bet it still helps a little in some cases, just not as obviously if you're strobing anyway, except perhaps under natural light.
