Hi fellow Olympians,
Just got back from Catalina Island where I practiced a little more with my recently acquired rig (E-330, Ikelite case, 2x DS-51). I think I achieved some improvement over last time (thanks, jlyle!!), where backscatter was my biggest enemy. Tried to aim strobes outward this time and that seemed to work. However, I also tried manual strobe control (Only used TTL before) and came across some questions. Maybe some of you have had similar experience with some of this.
When shooting macro (Sigma 105mm), I got black pictures when using f22 and 1/60 at ISO 100 or 200. Had to crank f stop open up to f14 or more to get halfway decent exposure. Also, the outward aiming of strobes didn't work at all in macro. Strobes had to be inches away from the lens and aimed inward to get recognizable images. I came across a menu item in the camera setting that says 'flash sync' and offers various shutter speeds to choose from. Since I didn't really know what this does, I set it to 1/60 at first and then noticed that I was no longer able to set faster speeds on the cam. So I went back and set the sync speed to 160 or something like that. What exactly is this for?
When using the 14-54 lens, there were times when the AF would not focus correctly on clearly defined objects in clear water, resulting in tons of nicely composed but completely blurry Garibaldi fish portraits. Dome port issue maybe? Most of the time, I did not have this problem, though. Weird.
Lastly, the cam would freeze sometimes and ignore any input from the controls. Fixable only by turning it off and back on. The cam never does that on land. Could this be a sync issue with the strobe circuitry?
Pics will follow soon!
