I have read alot about Martin's operation and the many rave reviews. I was looking at his website and the packages he offers, and noticed that he offers unlimited shorediving in front of his shop. My question is, what can one expect to see and/or encounter shorediving there? Just trying to get an idea. Thanks.

His shop is located at the international pier, and the shore diving is basically in front of the El Cid La Ceiba hotel. There is a an sunken plane in the area. do a search on shore diving in front of the La Ceiba.

DiverG is correct. The shore diving there has what is left of a plane and lots of rubble. Lots of critters enjoy hiding in rubble plus along the shoreline is also a good place to look for critters.

What about current - if they allow shore diving, then I would assume that it is reduced there compared to out by the reefs? Is the vis reduced, also?

There is usually not much current there. It is somewhat protected. It is a mostly sandy bottom but the viz is usually pretty good there. Of course nothing compared to the viz out on the reefs but still a pretty good ck out dive or shore dive.

Hi DiverMo!
In front of Martin's and in front of La Ceiba (as mentioned, right next to each other) is what we consider our backyard! It is where we take hundreds of our photo & digital imaging students to do thier workshop - it is a really great little shore dive FILLED with marine life! Both day & night!!!! Although it is slightly protected, and the current MOST of the time is light & comfortable, sometimes, like all dives on the island, it can be strong, so as in all good diving practices, check it out yourself first & ask the dive shop staff also! I only mention this so that you don't have a false sense of "no current". Not only is there the sunken airplane, but that whole little reef line has eels, lobster, crab, scorpion fish, Cozumel Splendid Toadfish, drumfish (juv & adult) seafans, pillar coaral, grunts, angels, tangs, chubs - and that was all just on yesterday's shore dive! Enjoy it!

Ditto with above, mostly a sand bottom, what's left of the plane and small scatterd coral heads to poke around. currents usually very mild because of the protection from the pier. have seen cuddle fish about, octopus around the plane and oodles of juvinile fish about. It's a nice shore dive, very shallow, about 35' so you can get a lot of bottom time. we usually stay at La Ceiba and it's my regular check out dive.
It also make a pretty good night dive, by the way.

Thanks, all. Reason I was wondering was I am planning to take my family to Coz, and me and my two sons (20 and 15) are certified. We'll dive, the girls will shop - go figure. I can't take them on three tank dives every day we are there, I'm throwing this trip together on a shoestring as it is. So, I was thinking maybe three days of 2 tank dives, and then some shore diving to fill up the rest of the time. I was just wondering if the shore diving would be worthwhile or not. Sounds like it is!

Hey Mo when are you going to Coz ?
I be there from Feb 18 to 27 and Diving with Martin also
