Hi Guys,

As you may have seen I am new to this forum. What a surprise I didn't know such a community exits :). I am not new to swimming I have practically spent a lot of my time in the sea as I live on an island, so swimming is quite popular.

I have started to consider spearfishing, but my main problem is what terms I need to use when searching for gear. For example I have found a site to buy fins from, one of the choices is either full or free diving. What should I look for in equipment for spearfishing?

Thanks, in advance.
TheFreeman.

JBL makes fine spearguns. The Mares pneumatics are sweet too. I've used a Mares Mini Sten for over 10 years and haven't had a single problem with it. I've never even had to use the pump to put more air into it. It has enough frequent flier miles to go around the world 4 times for how much I've traveled with it.

I will keep that in mind :) when it comes to equipment for free diving which 3 brands would you suggest? I kno such a question may be simple but when researching the results are endless :) .... What I am expecting is not the best of best brands something high quality with reasonable prices, I am ready to "invest" in my equipment as I rather buy something good once that end up changing every few months.

JBL tends to be the cream of the crop for spearguns. I've used them and they're awesome. They've also got a very wide variety of sizes and models. Cressi makes spearguns too but I've heard mostly negative things about them (they don't last long, they're built poorly, etc.). I really don't have a top 3 list. As I said, I love JBL and Mares.

If you want to see some reallllly awesome freediving/spearfishing check out Cameron Kirkconnell. He's a machine. I love this video of him where he takes the opportunity to grab a lobster when coming up with a huge grouper!

Riffe specialize in spearfishing equipment. You might give them a call with some of your questions. What to buy may be dependent on your intended application, diving conditions, and personal preferences.
