Ok...I apologize for this dumb question but it had me curious...what happens under water if you have to cough? Do regulators breath freely enough to where it isn't a problem or what? Again I know this is a dumb question but having never been diving before I was curious.

haha...thanks trinigordo...i knew it sounded like a really dumb question...but had to ask! :D

No question is dumb!!! :-)

Cough all you want.

Trinigordo:
Cough away bro. You could vomit through your regulator if you were so inclined
Funny thing is............he wasn't kidding at all! Yep, gross as hell but you can do it. Just be careful when you hit the purge button to have your tongue blocking the mouthpiece so you don't get it back down the wrong pipe.

DeputyDan:
Not a problem to spit from your chew either.

So that's what that was, and I thought the trail of brown was from the other end.
(Note to self, next time lead)

Ikkie78, sure you can cough, feed the fish and at least DD can spit his chew through his, in any case I do like to grab on to mine when coughing. It's not the time when we have the most control and I would hate to add coughing the reg out to the mix.

I was absolutely flabbergasted when a friend of mine directed a person feeling sick pre-dive, that in case of anything you should vomit through the regulator. I thought to myself why in god's name would I want to do that to my baby? Then he explained it to me, when you vomit the first thing you do after spewing would be to try to breathe, without the reg in the mouth that might mean drinking more than breathing. Sounds logical but I still don't think I will ever vomit through my baby, regardless of situation

ok, I used to chew, but I have no idea how one could put a dip in between their cheek and their gums, and then put the regulator mouthpiece in the same place without "disturbing" the dip and ending up swallowing it! I suppose you could use those packets?

Also, unless you are doing some deco diving or using doubles at 40 feet, I don't see how you could be down long enough to feel the need to chew.
