I really think this post serves a larger purpose. To the SCUBA newbie, acronyms/abbreviations may drown us before water ever does!

That said, it would be very nice for someone(s) to compile a list of common (and not so common) acronyms and a mod post it as a sticky on the forums...sort of as a QRG<---Quick Reference Guide

Some that come to mind are SP, LDS, BP, BC, Deco, etc...

Maybe the best way to do it would be to start a thread with a brave/willing soul to compile as many as they can think of, then the mod can sticky it to the top, and people could add to it as time goes on.

What do you think?:snorkel:

I can't help but feel I must be the last person on earth who hasn't clued in yet, but I see all the references... DIR this, DIR that. What the heck is it, and why are people so worked up about it?

EXACTLY...LMAO!!!

However, as I scrolled through the list, many of the ones that appear regularly on this board were absent: LDS, BP, Wing, SP, etc... ;-0

Sooo.....where do we go from here?

Again, thanks for the contribution!

thanks o-ring :) maybe you could help me with one other thing. i had the same problem as Boogie711 when i first came to the board, but by now i think i know most of the scuba related acronyms/ abbreviations.
i do still have problems with forum related ones (since english isn't my native language). like lol, lmao, imho.. and so on. most of them i understand but some of them confuse me completely.. so maybe you know another link where those kind of things can be found!

The Internet acronyms are giving you trouble... Here's a few links that should get you squared away...sometimes I forget that not everyone wasted their formative years playing MUD or hanging out in IRC

http://thor.prohosting.com/~arema/download/acronim.htm

http://emoticonuniverse.com/slang/

http://www.omnicron.com/~fluzby/sister-share/acronyms.htm

http://www.solscape.com/chat/acronyms.html

Here's some others unique to the board:

BP - backplate

bp/wing - backplate and wing

LDS - local dive shop

SP - I am guessing this is ScubaPro (an equipment manufacturer)

thanks cave diver and o-ring :D

i already had a quick look at those links and they're exactly what i'm looking for!

I had the same problem when I first came to the boards a couple of weeks ago. So many acronyms that it was hard to follow some of the posts. The nice thing is that there are a lot of really great people here, that even if you don't feel brave enough to ask what something is in a post (which I'm glad somebody did) they'll be more than happy to PM (whoops, there I went and did it) with you about it.
